For those of you who have already gotten into pre-season camps/workouts , What has been the biggest problem facing you so far (whether it be position groups, offense, defense, or the team in gernal) and what have you done so far to correct it?
Ill go first: O-Line wise:
1) Our pass pro footwork is as good as it should be. I have fairly decent athletic linemen who just arent very good at footwork yet in relation to our protection. My solution so far: Show film of them in practice, show film of teams how I want it to look like, and try to slow it down more during indy technique (teach) time.
Team Wise: CONSISTENCY! I think 80% of our kids are pretty mentally tough because it is something our entire staff preaches and models on a daily basis. At least in my position groups (O & D line), and during team time, I am constantly harping on effort-effort-effort. It seems like at times, our kids go balls to the wall, best effort in some drills, and then in some periods not. I don't know if it is because they are lazy, tired from the high tempo practices, or because they are confused. I dont realy have much of a solution for it so far except to keep demanding consistency and try to show it on film when they are loafing.
If anyone has suggestions on similar problems feel free to reply. Best of luck to everyone this season!

One thing that my guys (O-line) are struggling with is the concept of keeping their chest on their knees to help with low pad level. It is a phrase they hear a million times a day (one of my seniors was actually joking about it with me today) but some kids are still slow to pick it up. I've tried to fix this by slowing down just a hair and getting kids in that posistion and working them in that position during our drills as well as showing them video of what I want it to look like.
One thing that I have been pleased so far with is our work on our combo blocks. They are really getting the concept of being hip to hip and pushing the heck out of the down guy (we haven't even talked about getting to LB's yet), so the pad pinches that we have done nearly every one of our 10 days of camp (at least for 5m) has paid off so far.

Coach, if you can, get ahold of George DeLeone's O-Line skills DVD from coaches choice. There is alot of great visuals of what you are talking about

Numbers...this is our concern
I honestly cannot draw up an accurate lineup until I know who is committed to playing. I have 5 linemen that I will pencil in as starters but have not seen two of them this summer, not even once.
We have several kids who leave town for the summer because their parents are divorced , so we cannot execute and rep our offense and defense.
Negative people. I find that when numbers are low to begin with, one negative person in the community who is hellbent on seeing us fail (because he wants the job) can impact some kids on their decision to play (particularly if the negative guy is pals/works with/drinking buddy of some parent of a player). Bad information is something I have worked hard to control here. (ie, someone was telling kids that they had to complete 100 hours of community service to play football here).

Inexperience.
We are just as talented as we were last season, but I do not know how resilant we will be.
OL.
It's a miracle if we can find OT's

TDmaker, hope everything is going well with your family, anticipate good news for you, our prayers are with you. I just don't ever have an idea about who I will have to come play. We are a small private school, but with the economy being what it is, i've lost some great kids. Some to the economy, some to the "excuse of the economy" It very difficult not knowing who you will have come August, but I've learned in the last few years to have a little patience. Talk about an "old dog" needing to learn a new trick-I have learned a do everything I can do to prepare then hope for the best. I think that the DW offense can help me not have to be so specialized. It does seem though that the skill kids are the ones that the other schools like to talk into playing for them. They don't realize that it's the linemen that really win the football games, I guess I'm lucky in that regard. OJW

Having to hold off on practice to make sure we get 100% there..
We will not start practice until August 10th.
Some/probably most.. will start on the 3rd with conditioning and such.. and non-padded practices..
We will hold off for a week..
Mainly.. because I will not get my new coaching in until the 3rd.. and I need to spend that week teaching them..
And.. heck.. we practiced all summer anyways for 7 on 7.. maybe these 2 weeks off is good for them..

Consistency and being complacent. We had a very successful season last year. First one in a long time. I just don't want us to think that we are good. We still have a long way to go.

I'm in the second week with me 7th and 8th grade team. Last week the biggest problem was we has some attitudes that needed adjusted both from the players and a couple of the coaches. This week the biggest problem we have had is finding a center that can consistently make the snaps. We are switching to an unbalanced single wing this year and our centers are having a heck of a time with the snap to the 3 back. The second biggest problem we are having is the best kind of problem to have and that is too much talent. I have more starters than I have positions. Out of my 30 players 20 could start on both sides of the ball.

Numbers here too - Lost two during two-a-days so now I have 22, 9-12. Pretty solid starting units on O and D but if someone gets hurt....
It's a catch 22 at a small school. The more the numbers shrink, the better in shape they have to be and you have to work them harder. The harder you have to work them, the more the nunbers shrink. Lets see what happens.

jpdaley I know where you are ocming from. When our staff took over our program, we had 22 kids 9-12. The main things we did was recruit the hallways like hard and I think the biggest help was having our HC and another assistant work at the JR high so they were instrumental in getting kids out. Now we average 30 frosh a year.

The only 7 on 7 we go to this summer we lose our starting mike backer to a broken leg for 4-5 weeks and then the next day our back-up destroys his hand and we are still waiting results on him....
Mind you we only have about 30-32 guys so we are scrambling right now...let the fun begin

expectations...
we have been rebuilding the program here for a few years now and started seeing the light at the end of the tunnel last season. Finished 5-5, had 2 heartbreaking 4th quarter losses in league. We were playoff eligible but didnt get it. Best record since the 90s.
We have a lot coming back and all the teams we lost to last season wont be as good as they were a year ago due to graduation. So this will be the first year anyone expects a little out of us. Sometimes our kids get the mindset that they are better and we have to talk to them to explain that we havent won any games yet in 2009. And that anyone can beat us. I guess its good they are confident but i just want them to not overlook anybody
Also i dont know how they will respond to the pressure of people expecting them to win. We were the underdog last year, now people will be expecting us to win some games

coacbbdub Its nothing wrong with have your players confident but you have to give them a dose of reality every once in awhile too. Remind them theres nothin wrong with expectations but they better understand the price you have to pay to be a champion. I would show film of practice everyday so they can see he mistakes they make. Another thing we are doin this year is spending the last hour of practice under the lights at the game field.

We start conditioning on the 3rd and 2-a-days start Aug. 10. We just found out our starting QB is going to miss days 3-6 due to a funeral.
Last week our rival school accepted 2 studs that tried to get into our school but neither had academics (transcripts) that were even close enough for me to go in and ask for an exception.
The renovations on our gym (locker rooms) are behind schedule.
And ... we are all very excited to get started!

I found out that Tarzan and Conan want to play golf ....we suited 16 so far I think.
Three linemen at the moment and we have had "the chat" with the backup runningbacks and tightends. Always a fun chat as their eyes get real big at the thought of playing on the line.
man we have great kids though, I love this team.

Thirded. Only one senior leader and he's one of those quiet leader types. When you have several real leaders, having one be a quiet "lead by example" types is great, but not when you just went 2-8 and without a league win. We need vocal, positive leadership and we just aren't getting it.
Also, we're not very good and we're not very deep. We're attempting to fix that by using as many opportunities as possible to 'double teach' and increase our learning as much as possible. I.e. during defensive inside run periods, having our OL coach focus on coaching up our 2's and 3's as much as possible while our DL coach works the 1's. Pretty simple and obvious stuff, but that's the kind of stuff that's gone missing the last few years.

Sounds like TDMAKER and I are in the same boat. Our numbers are VERY low this year. Gave out equipment to 16 varsity players yesterday. Hopefully more will come out. Only a handful of the kids buys in to the weight room so we cant really use the 'No lift, no play" that I would love to use.

Three minor issues:
1. Playing hard at all times. We are working on that mind set of getting off the bus ready. 2. No senior leadership. 3. O-line should be worldbeaters will they?

I have been on my "geddyup" about our concerns about numbers.
I called all of my boys and gave physical and practice update info, called kids that havent expressed intrest but played last year ms level and hs level. called parents that I know see other parents and asked them to help spread word of physicals and two a days.
wrote to newspaper to get the info out this week too. I am going to walk through town and hang posters in the hangouts.
I hear one of our youth programs doesnt have a coach yet, maybe Ill coach that too?

Numbers here. Looking at 33-37 kids total grades 9-12 in a school of 600. Crazy thing is we have won 28 of 33 games in the past three years. 23 varsity kids maybe. Tough kids just limited numbers. Other issues: 1AA OL prospect 6'3 250 5.0 kid would rather work 11 hours day than lift and prepare. Best player RB/DB was recruited at a boarding school (these schools are dirty BTW). He had 13 TDs as a soph. and was a great kid and student. Also lost 18 of 22 starters. I guess that is why we get paid.
