I was wondering how many of you use facebook and the like for your program?
I have been reluctant to enter that world as I can hardly find the time to email and, of course, hang out at this site.
For those of you that do use it, have you found it beneficial for posting important dates, etc? I was also thinking it would be good for fundraising, etc.
Again, for those of you that use it what has worked, what hasnĀ“t, what would you do differently if starting out again, what would you keep the same, in short, what advice/feedback do you have?
Thanks much!

I use facebook for the promotion of the team and recruitment of people because game of football is not so popular in Croatia. We are more of a soccer nation.
I can only say: "Thank God on Facebook!"

I set up a facebook group for the team this summer. I made a profile specifically for that so it's seperate from the one I use with friends and family.
I absolutely LOVE the page. It's about as basic as possible - a quick explanation, a picture of our logo, and a message board. I figure if they want it pretty'd up that'd be a great job for one of them.
The nice thing is posting on the wall. If I have an announcement to make I post it on there. Most of the kids get the updates right away. Then they take care of telling the few who don't. We also have a webpage for parents. That's where we put the PR type stuff. The page is just an easy way to communicate.
It's also nice because of the status updates. The kids put a lot of info on there. Some of it you plain don't want but some of it gives you good insight into what's going on for them. They put things up on there they'd never say to a coach.

rbush- Did you set it up as a "Fan" page or just a regular page? Do you open it up to the general public or players only? Parents?
Are you able to see their profiles? I don't want to be able to see what they are saying/doing.

The facebook page is only for players. You have to join the group to do any posting. I let everyone know that only players will be accepted on that page. The full web page I built was at a site called weebly.com. It's not fancy but it is free and easy. That's the one the fans are directed to.
How your kids set up their profiles is the biggest factor in if you can see them. I could with most of our kids, I just make it a point not to. I let them know that if they put something stupid out there and I see it I have to turn it in. Hasn't been a problem yet. All I really do on facebook is post announcements or browse the homepage status updates.

I use facebook...but I am not "friends" with any players. But, I have a group set up exactly like rbush for each season, and only players are invited. Other coaches are also in this group. In this group I post messages, and talk to the kids, get on kids for missing workouts, talk some Xs and Os, etc.
Many kids now don't check their email as much as they check their facebook account.
Times are a changing.

I use Facebook and Twitter to network with other coaches. I have set up a social networking site just for team on Ning. It is very convenient for adding workouts, videos, making announcements, posting dates on a calendar. Ning is very simple to use.

Good ideas on here. I have been thinking of doing something like this. Things change fast. I sent out a team email the first week of June with express instructions to reply, saying they had received it, and I got one back. They just don't check their email much anymore. I sent a letter using snail mail after that...what a novel idea...I like the Facebook ideas.

For anyone who would like to see, I have unlocked the Main page of my team's "social networking" site that I created on Ning: www.wjusoftball.com

There is a local company here that is selling teams software that is like facebook. It's accessible to fans and family to a point, but you have to be able to log in to get to the area where the coach and players post. When I last talked to the coach involved, they'd already sold it to Mack Brown, and Jim Tressel. Instant dissemination of information by the coach to the players.

It is, but this software is a far more secure, and it's obviously personalized to the team. Logo's, colors and what not. It's like having a secure team specific/team only facebook.

I looked into this too...my recommendation is, start everything up on facebook and see how much participation you get. I have about 1/4 of my players on there now...if it ever got to 3/4 of the team, I would consider looking into customized stuff.

At the HS level, it might not be worth the investment...some of your kids may not have the ability to participate due to not having a computer at home or no cell phone. I know most have these things, but not all. At the college level, I can see it being of benefit, and all the coach has to do is make participation manditory...the college kids can get to a computer some time during each day.

You know even with some of my poorest students, they usually at least know someone with a computer. They all have facebook pages anyway. I like the idea to get the word out on any schedule changes over the summer.

Twitter has possibilities for a program as well. Anyone use that either stand-alone or in conjunction with Facebook?

I asked him what he was doing on facebook jokingly and he said to recruit a little.. Was talking with a coaching colleague the other day and he was recently at a D-1 school visiting with a coaching buddy of his and said the new big thing in their recruiting was Skype, the voice/video services where they can get the kids on web cams and talk with them. It apparently doesn't count as a phone call since it's all done electronically.
