Good stuff, as usual. The evolution of robber to quarters isn't that great of a leap, and this 'evolution' only further illustrates that a defense conjeals to the offensive formation it is set to defend. Quarters, by all rights, is nothing much more than split-field robber, anyway, it just better matches up with the 1 back looks rather than the pro-2 back looks.
This may be a stretch, and Va tech's nickel may have evolved from Bill Bates' UF teams, but I seem to remember Barry Alvarez spearheading the nickel (42) as an every down defense in the late 80s with Lou Holtz and ND

Thanks Spreadattack, that was excellent. I understand this a whole lot better now. Vass has helped me with the "G" tons of times, but I'm so dense I would always ask him the same thing over and over. I'm sure he was wondering if this old dog would ever learn the new trick. Now I know I needed "visual aids." (I'm one of those people who orders off the menu using the pictures) Thanks again for breaking this down, great job. OJW

As a side note, that is one thing that I'm finally really embracing with the internet, is it is really nice to have like mini clinics where you can write something, put videos, put slides, and then be able to respond to questions and all that. It helps me learn more too.

Nice job Broph. Check my site monday as I'll have a link up to it then. Excellent post and excellent pictures Brophy Another great aspect of the VT "G" defense was the ability of the LB's to "cheat". Almost no one talks about this but it was key to the development of this style defense. If you look at brophy's first 2 pictures..you can see the Mac lined up tight in the A gap and the Will aligned in the C Gap when faced with what the defense would have called a right, right rip rip..When the lb's heard the front call (rt rt )and the pass stregnth (rip,rip.).they knew they could slide away because through film study..they knew almost no one would run to that side because the Rover was on the los. The defensive end on the 1,7 side almost certainly would have slanted inside putting the Will in a great position. There is another good picture of it in pictures 8 and 9..they have the front set away from the Fb #44 (Conrad, who was to say the least a pretty good player) and the backers slid to him..not a bad idea..don't forget zone read wasn't invented yet...The G defense is a great defense...but To me #1 Vt had great players and #2 they only really played 2 fronts and the coaches (even before Foster was DC) knew them inside and out...they busted their a$$es in the office..they also traded a ton of film w/ UW and anybody else that was running their front..The defense was almost like the wishbone because in the begginning teams would radically adjust their offense whenever they faced the "G". IMO I think sometimes the defense actually gets more credit than the coaches that really develped and perfected it
