Anybody else having this issue? A few times a week...actually more than a few times a week I can't sleep because I'm thinking about everything football. Everything from organizing our youth camp to high school practice starting up soon, coaching staff members I haven't seen much all summer to staff members who have been there almost everyday, our sophomore Varsity QB who looks great to our JV O-Line that's going to get someone killed, equipment (football & video), base blocking vs. fold blocking a particular look, defensive adjustments to jet motion, finishing strong with the kids in the weightroom, and getting kids eligible with correspondence courses that I'm helping them with. Heck, I woke up early this morning worried about the headsets and making sure they are working correctly. Must be that time of year. Please let me know if I'm nuts for being this way because I know some coaches would accuse me of feeling unprepared, therefore, I'm not sleeping as well as I normally do. I believe there is just so much going on and this is typical of head coaches as the season approaches at least young ones anyway like me still trying to get their feet wet. I'm 27 and in my third year at the helm of the program. I learn so much every single day about being a head coach...its amazing really. I never felt like this in the two seasons I was an assistant coach. Your main concern there is coaching your position and helping with overall schemes. Your thought process is not on the entire picture unless you've been an assistant for a long time. These types of assistants at the college level have the responsibility of Associate Head Coach. I know every coach feels like "this year is going to be our year" but we think this year could be a break out season for us. I believe all of this sleep lost will not be without it's rewards. Good luck coaches. Thanks for you help this offseason and I look forward to hearing your input about things we run into during the season.

I am with you here. I havent slept for the last 3 weeks. I lay there awake either wanting to check the forums, my email or just doodle plays or the lineups or make practice plans. We have been doing mini camp and youth camp and it seems I replay the days events and start thinking about the next days activity.
I also think about the drama that some kids create lol.
Anyhow, every year the sleep goes to the back burner ...

Yeah you're right. But I can't have a couple night caps and call it good. 2...turns to 6...turns to 10. I need to be up and doing stuff the next day otherwise the sleepless nights compound one another. I like the suggestion. No I really like the suggestion. I'd like to say it's a tried and true method but it's been a bust sometimes for me. Hungover the next day and useless. The thinking picks up where it left off when that's over with so I can't sleep through the night again.

Been that way for a few weeks now. Can't sleep....two-a-days seem so close...time dragging making them seem far away... thinking this, thinking that. It won't stop until season ends.

It's in the air, isn't it? We had a parents meeting last night and then went out to plan out a spot at our field for our new electronic scoreboard/clock that the Rotary club is donating. I'm excited, as we are moving up to the top league in the province and have a solid squad coming in. I'm excited every year though and this is my 17th season coaching.

Sleep? What's that?
I am in the same boat as all of you - I have basically coached my whole program by myself all summer because of assistants being flakes and having "real jobs" but I love it and would not trade it in for the world...

My MS team started practice Monday and I haven't had a decent nights sleep since. Lucky for me I'm laid off from work and can catch up on my sleep during the day, if I can sleep. It is begining to turn into a really long season.

jgordon1,
2 Aleves ahh? I don't like to take anything like that unless I absolutely need to for my back, a really bad headache, or for getting banged up in drills at practice. But if two of those do the trick for you, I'm tempted to try. I've got some in the cabinet. I'll get back to you. Thanks for the tip. Tonight I saw a varsity player that was bussing at a restaurant in town whom I haven't seen all summer at the weightroom. I'm still alittle fired up about that so I'll need some extra help getting to sleep tonight. The things that chap a head coach's @$$.

I have been in the same boat. I just moved to florida in may second week of spring ball head coach got fired for breakig the rules. Then an intern head coach comes in some members of the staff just didn't like the fact that we said screw the old coach he broke the rules. New hed coach got hired at end of June, and I can tell the differnce all ready he has been a head coach for five weeks, and he is 10 times more organized then the rule breaker, and allows me to install the offense and everything. We have a number of talented kids, and they areal working hard. We are slowly but surely getting them to competing in everything that they do, as when they do that they will learn how to win. Some kids aren't buying in,and the sad part is until they do they won't play. Their response when callenged it's not a race. Sad part about that is everything in life is a competition, getting a job, getting into college, everything they do is a cmpetition. 15 Days until we start down here, and I can't wait. Of course of the three guys the rule breaker brought down, I am the only one the new guy kept.

Just went to the doctor for a checkup/physical. We got talking about football and what I go through as a head coach. I ended up walking out of there with a script for sleep and one for anxiety. Don't know if I will use or even fill them but I thought that it was kind of funny. Sounds like we are all the same. If only we could somehow turn our brain off so we can get some rest.

Ive been good so far. I know i wont get a wink the night before our first game, i have always been like that. Like a little kid the night before christmas
One thing that frustrates me in the season is i cant fall asleep because i relive games/scenarios/schemes in my head. I close my eyes, and i replay a bad play or one of those plays where the ball bounces the wrong way. A missed tackle or block, the oh what could have been type of deal. Sometimes even as far as back as when i played. Before i know it i am so mentally into it that my heart is pumping like i am actually playing in a game.
In some ways i am blessed because i have always had a very photographic memory, it makes picking things up easy, but it makes football losses into nightmares because i can replay every snap of the game, perfectly in my head. So i usually try to fall asleep with the tv on, if i concentrate on the tv then the crazy football thoughts dont pop up into my head and i can usually get to sleep ok. But nights after a heartbreaking loss, forget about it, i might as well just use the time and start scheming for the next week
