I work as a financial advisor.
Naturally, I work a ton with small to medium size business owners.
Something I've noticed the good ones do is hire consultants.
Seriously, though.
From Fortune 500 to Mom's Homemade Pickles Inc., the best ones have outside firms come in and examine the structure of their business, and then discuss the inefficiencies with in said business, and finally, how to correct the problems.
After reading Bill Walsh's "Finding the Winning Edge", I realized how much football is like business. I mean, the HC as CEO type stuff is RIGHT ON.
So, what would a "Football Coaching Consultant Firm" look like?
In my mind, it would be less "what to do", and more "how/why to do it".
Ask seasoned coaches what the best part of the clinic was, and they invariably tell you it was listen to coach so-and-so talk about how they build pride in their weight room (or something like that).
The X's and O's stuff is something most staffs have down.
Instead, a program designed to help coaches should focus on:
*Communication-
-Between players and coaches
(this one could actually be a big part of it.......Defensive coordinator says" "I don't need 3 new fire zone packages, I need a better way to communicate to my special education DE what we are trying to accomplish in the fire zone."
Between coaches and coaches
(Staff responsibilities, whom coaches what, where does the buck stop?, are we truly on the same page?)
*Player discipline-
How to build it. Maintain it. Make it self-sustainable so we can FOCUS on FOOTBALL.
Administration relations
*Fund-raising-
Boosters relations
Athletic Director relations
*Community
Marketing campaign
Service
How to fill the stands?
*Winning Attitude
How to build it?
Captains/leadership.
Pitfalls/adversity.
Learning to respond.
*Technology
Are we at a disadvantage due to technology shortcomings?
How do we fix that?
*Recruiting
Efficiently and Productively
*Development
Weight room atmosphere
Organization
There could be some ideas about wiping out inefficiencies in practice planning (point of diminishing returns or tempo).
A big thing could be "We've done this forever, but is it working?" type thinking.
I appreciate anyone who took the time for that free association rambling I just did.
Anyone have other ideas on what a "Coaching Consultant" seminar/workshop should look like?
