That's no big deal. Last season, the Detroit Lions were in talks with my 83 year old neighbor,Joan. But she slipped on the ice during the winter and broke her hip. So they hired Jim Schwartz instead. They said they couldn't wait for her to recover. They were under a lot of pressure to unveil their new coach and totally revamped uniforms.

Bo Pelini went from QB coach at Cardinal Mooney to scout in the NFL (49ers), where when he impressed and moved up to assistant coach in that first season. His initial duties included a lot of video work and player scouting before being moved up to assist the defensive backs.
After he graduated at Ohio State, he was a grad assistant to Hayden Fry at Iowa.

The DC for the Jets, Pettine (sp) was coaching HS in 2000 or 2001 and is now a coordinator in the NFL. I believe he started out in the video/computer area and worked his way up quick.

Mike Holmgren was a HS teacher and coach in San Fran / San Jose before moving up the NFL ladder.

One of my coaches did it. He was a walk on at Nebraska and got a recommendation from the coaching staff there.

I beleive Mike worked in Personell as a scout then worked with the defense, as a linebackers coach, before becoming a D/C. He was formerly the Head Coach at North Penn HS in Pa. His father was the Mike Petine Sr of CB West fame
