I'm doing something new this year and doing some leadership training sessions with my seniors. I've put together some stuff from The Winners Manual by Jim Tressel and The Team Captains Leadership Manual by Jeff Jansesn among some other sources. I'm wondering if you guys have any suggestions, especially things that might be more interactive rather than me just talking.

Coach - I've used Jansen's stuff for the past three years....very good stuff. I've had success grouping players, having them read the material and share with the rest of the group. I've also found video clips from various sports/football movies that tie in with material from the different chapters.

Coach-
You might also look into some of stuff by John C. Maxwell. I don't think it was originally intended for athletics, but he has some good stuff on both leadership and being a team player. Last year we did some leadership and team player stuff. We broke up the team by class. HC took the seniors and talked about what it meant to be a good leader. Asst. HC did juniors, DC took sophomores, myself and another coach split up the freshman. We all talked about the same topics of what it means to be a team player. All of it was based off Maxwell's stuff. Our HC picked out just about ten of the topics that he liked the best, or thought were the most important. I know that it really helped our seniors and juniors. I think we were able to reach a few of the freshmen. We were definitely able to use it later in the season and year when they would start to complain about something.

We have been doing leadership training with our seniors during the spring of their junior year. We use materials from Jansen and Tressel, but have also added a lot of other items from Nick Saben's, Coach K from Duke, and the BFS Be an 11 manual.

Maybe you could lead a couple of sections and then didvide the seniors like into like groups of 3 and break the book into sections and have each group present a topic. there is a fancy education name for that but I forgot it

The sources for leadership lessons are all excellent, however don't forget that leadership is a skill that some kids will be good at and some won't (just like running, catching, throwing, etc...). Don't expect a kid to be a Leader just because he is a Starter or a Senior. Some kids just can't lead. Good "Leaders" will recognize that!

Great point fbdoc. Plus some kids don't want to lead or don't feel they are able to lead. We have kids in our leadership training that just feel they cannot do it. They are afraid to step up, they are afraid to take risk. Can be disappointing.

Thanks - one of the hardest lessons I had to learn was sticking with a group of seniors that just couldn't lead. Obviously I could have done more to help them but in hindsight, they just weren't cut out to lead.

Thanks coaches. If anyone has more ideas please post them. I'd be very interested to see that stuff from Georgia. Will they send it out? Does anyone already have it?
