I just turned on the radio (6:30 PM, Friday) and Pro Football Weekly is tralking about how the KC Chiefs are unhappy because QR Dwayne Bowe is 20 lbs. overweight.
My opinion: it's June. Camp is a month and a half away. Who cares what kind of shape he's in now?
I guess my question is: as HS coaches do we worry too much about the offseason?

I used to care about it but it has waned the past few months. I've seen the two extremes... someone who busts tail in the summer offseason and is worn down by the time the season begins and someone who busts tail during the winter/spring offseason and limited summer training and are ready and in shape by the time the season begins.
For me now, the summer is for maintaining what is done in the winter & spring.

If you are at a school where most of your athletes are three sport participants this is the most important time for building team cohesion and setting expectations. The rest of the year the athletes are competing in other programs and now that it is summer we have more access to them. Teams are built during this time of year. Kids should be excused for summer vacations with the family or a sports camp but if they are in town they had better be working with everyone else!

I think year round strength training is very important. Obviously if we are more talented and can just show up and win then its not a big deal but when we are smaller, slower, weaker and have fewer athletes then wed better be working year round to make ourselves better.

Were at at a school where we started december 1st 4 days a week. We lift twice a week inseason... Overall once we get to June I am less concerned about weight training and more concerned about speed, conditioning, agility and sport specific stuff (7 on 7's, TEams Camps, Offense/defense installation stuff and getting us in football mode...).

We encourage our guys to play other sports. I feel there is no substitute for competition. We tell the guys that are not playing another sport they need to be with us. We focus a lot on lifting and technique in Jan - May. When June hits we continue to lift but our focus is on change of direction, speed, etc. Our drills are position specific as much as possible to help reinforce their techniques introduced to them in our first camp.
