I'm trying to but have yet to be proven successful.
Reasons for using it include sending the players a quote of the day, last minute reminders of schedules ("Form xyz is due today"), and a way for them to send me messages about practice or school ("Meet in room 104 today instead of the weight room"). Separate account for the coaches for reminders and updates.
Why use it - Figure it will save me time when I need to get a message out to the staff and/or players and it's not practice time (time/location change). I won't have to make a calling tree or e-mail (which has no guarantee of timely receipt).
Problems - Seems that I'm having difficulty making the right setup so when I send a quote of the day it's not getting out.
Will this be successful? I don't know yet.

I've set up a facebook group for kids, parents, admins to join...where I can post messages I want people to see. Have about 1/4 of my kids on it. Posts are usually very positive, talk a little X's and O's, got a parent in there who sends me pictures to post. AD likes it

You guys really need to be careful here.. wait.. nevermind.. That has been burned into my head so long that it is spilling out of my eyes!!
Stay professional with all this stuff.. and do not worry about it.. its technology..
Went to an inservice where this guy wanted people to sign up for an inservice dealing with getting Ipods, twitter, facebook.. all in the learning process.. Something about "Using what they already Use"

Something about "Using what they already Use" The key is censorship. Terrible thing to say...but, you can't organize something like this, for semi-public viewing...and allow messages to be seen by the entire group along the lines of "Nice call on 4th down coach, you're an idiot" or "hey coach, F-YOU for not playing me Friday night" I have mine set up so I am the only one that posts. Some of my kids have YouTube accounts where they post videos of games that their parents shot...there are other groups within the school that are for "Football players only" that I have nothing to do with. Times are a change'en

I can pick up a phone or text everyone all at once in my contact list if what I have to say is that important.
Like always, a year from now something else will be the flavor of the day.

Most schools now have an automated phone service where one call can reach all players or students or any group. The Tech guy can set you up I bet. Email also works if your kids will give you an email addy.

I don't have Data on my cell. I an twitter from home. Just letting you know that many schools feel this social websites are inappropriate.
Email works just as good in my opinion or I can post things to our school website if I want to let all players know something.

They do not do this because the see them as necessarily inappropriate.. they do this because if they do not.. then kids would spend all day on these sites.. Inappropriate makes it sound like its immoral or something..

i have one as well ... twitter.com/CoachHuey ... why? i don't really know. but, i'll continue to use it and slowly figure out the best way to utilize it. use it mostly by texting from my phone, and it's tied to my facebook. but, at some point it may end up being a better 'product' for me.

I'm torn. On the one hand, I find that like, 90% of total twitter use is shallow and feel that the idea is kind of narcissistic, but on the other, I do see it being a pretty legit tool for a coach that wants to keep up with his players, or a teacher that wants an easy way to remind his classes about his HW, etc. But, the header told me he wanted to know about it, wanted us to have one, so... twitter.com/marinerfootballBy far my favorite thing are the joke twitter accounts, like this guy twitter.com/TheMime.

Why are people so obsessed with socialization and networking. I lived most of my life with out a cell phone and a personal computer. I hear so many people say its great for networking, but most of the time they send crap. I don't see it.

I'm resisting so far. Just heard a commentator, probably and old fart (51) like me who said that twitter has "peaked" and the "novelty is over". Also heard a report - could be urban legend - that there have been multiple instances of break-ins where the thieves checked twitter tweets to know when people were gone on vacation or even at work . For now, I'm very happy with email and our team website, or maybe I just call/text my captains and have them tweet it (ugh!). Call me a dinosaur.

Also heard a report - could be urban legend - that there have been multiple instances of break-ins where the thieves checked twitter tweets to know when people were gone on vacation or even at work . I'll call BS on that one, at least on a large scale and only based on my understanding of Twitter, which is limited at best. Don't you need to subscribe to a person's Twitter or at least check them out online to get Twittered about a person? If so then what are the odds that a burglar will pick you to track? Maybe if you're a well known rich guy like a Rockefeller or Boss Spacely that might be a problem but not for an average guy. I think that no lights, no cars in the driveway, and five newspapers laying on the lawn are probably better invitations for thieves. Something else I've heard is a warning that leaving GPSes in your car will lead crooks to your house if your car is stolen. Couldn't they find your house just as easily if there's anything with your address in your car?
