Just finished our spring scrimmage. Kids did a great job! The other team was really focused on stopping our Fly Sweep so the FB Dive was a big hitter. Also had some nice PA completions. Our Defense amazed us! We did almost zero hitting/tackling live - we did a ton of hit/wrap/drive on the one man sled - and our kids were blowing their backs up! We also came away healthy! Hope everyone else had a great spring!

We are a spread no-huddle team and we played a spread no-huddle team. We scored 3 times and they scored 3 times. We scored 2times the 1st half and once the second. They scored once the first half and twice the second. The difference was we had 9 going both ways and they had 2. We were without starting LT due to surgery on knee. We played with an 8th grader instead. Also lost starting LG in car wreck earlier in spring. I was pleased because when we were still fresh we played 4-3 tampa 2 and they could not get a first down untli we ran out of gas just before the first half. Our Defense really stepped up this spring and we will not have to score 40+ just to win games this year.

It went OK. New defense, interim HC, interim HC, replacing not-quite every varsity coach, and ~15 kids missing 1/2 of the practices to work on their grades so they aren't ineligible. LBs having a hell of a time learning how to zone drop after years of man coverage. We actually exceeded my expectations, but I'm kind of a worrier.

Brophy, you are without a doubt-matchless. We had a terrible Spring. It rained for two entire weeks everyday. The week before our jambo, we were outside for 1 day of contact. The day before the jambo, it rained so hard it flooded the school so we had no practice. The day of the Jambo, we were supposed to play two 45 min. running clock 1/2's, we didn't. We got in our first, then the weather came in and after 2 hours-we went home. I got so tired of walking around in wet shoes. We were NOT ready to play football. I have to replace my entire Oline and needed time for them to practice drive blocking-didn't get it. The team we played from 2 hours north of us, never lost a single day of practice and it showed. By the end of our 1/2 we were starting to get some timing down, but too late. OJW

Spring? Nice, thanks for asking. Weather's been nice. Got out to a couple clinics. Spent a few days at my Mom's over Easter and a couple at Camden Yards with my son.
Oh, wait. You mean spring FOOTBALL. Sorry, we don't have it in Virginia.

Phantom, I wonder about the value of Spring football. As many states as don't have it-still have really good high school football. I wonder if it does any good or not. I use it as a time of experimenting on unusual formations or ideas, getting weight lifting settled for those coming out of other sports, and working with kids at new positions. Seems like kids know that the Spring jamboree or scrimmages don't mean anything sometimes. I got that distinct feeling this year with my practices messed-up.
Just a thought, OJW

12 practices and 2 competitions...there are positives and other attributes.
+ good practice tempo + good attitudes, good kids
I was not personally satisfied in how much was built from a coaching perspective, how much equity was built to improve the product and/or leave it in a better position for the next time we pick it up (in the fall). I do not believe we improved fundamentals, therefore for me, it was a wash.
I don't really think it matters if the glass is half full or half empty......the more germane question is, what is that glass filled with?!

Northern California, North Coast Section. We get 10 days of helmets and footballs. No competitions or anything. 2,100 students in the school. We still have 3 days left, we don't graduate until June 18. I'm a first year HC after 4 as an assistant and 3 at the youth level.
Got 71 names on the roster, lucky to get 45-50 each day. We are the drama and performing arts magnet school so I had my backfield missing for 3 practices because they had to attend their class dance recital. Baseball went into the NCS playoffs so I lost a week there. Next week I've got some players that have to practice their roles in the drama class for their finals. Couple of kids with grades, couple now at adult school.
We're moving from wishbone power & option to flexbone option. Targeted exposing the players to the formations and 5 base plays. Defensively we're moving to a 3-5 with lots of aggressive stunts - we don't have the size to stand and power with anyone. That has gone well so far. The kids are very enthusiastic and have been paying attention. So I've got no problems with the kids that have been there. I'm keeping attendance and those that aren't there are known.
I split the team into 2 teams, Blue and White. I split the coaches into offense and defense. First day was testing and combine, next 8 are put-ins, final day is make-up testing and a "scrimmage". One day the blue is offense, white defense, then the next day they switch. Splitting the team into the Blue/White has let the coaches focus on their primary positions, and has also given us better time with the players. Example, instead of 20 receivers each day I'm dealing with 10, and it's for a longer time. The players like it as they see they are getting more and better "face time" with the staff.
Bottom Line: Good kids, excellent energy, lower than desired attendance, getting done about what I expected.

Just a thought, OJW That's why I don't really miss it. Since I coach in a state that doesn't have spring ball I'm supposed- by law, I think- to complain. I'm not complaining because I'm not sure how valuable it really is.

We are limited to 5 practices. So it became like a mini-training camp. We installed a new offensive scheme. I am the DC, so I called off the dogs and let the O have a self -esteem week.

Between the weather - similar to what OJW faced - and the other issues of prepping for finals, moms, flu, laziness and the like - I think we did ok. Part of our issues are simply changing the culture - with kids and parents. Would I be upset if Florida stopped spring ball? Not at all, but since we do have it, we'll try to get the most out of it. One nice thing was getting to see many of the kids who will be new starters come fall - we graduated 21 seniors! The new guys did ok.

It is so valuable and I believe the states that have spring ball, you see better depth in overall football.
That being said. I am at a new school
Offense: Switched from Hybrid Wing-T to Tony Franklin System What I saw from them was they learned how to practice, we are a two-platoon team.
Defense: We have to replace eight starters, but I feel like our kids learned great fundamentals and developed in their schemes.
There is still a lot to do. But I left Spring feeling good about our chances this year.

Spring ball went well, some good surprises and we won our exhibition game. We are moving into a different league and played one of the teams from that league so it was nice to see us be competitive. Really looking forward to the season.

Ours went pretty good. but it also helps when you have a D1 QB throwing to 2 D1 WR (the 3rd was out with a hurt ankle). Defense is what really surprised us. Had some kids really step up. Even though we were in the same boat as OJW we got around the rain by using the time to workout, watch film and then practiced in the gym. played a play-off team that went 9-3 last year and returned 2 D1 D-linemen (good god they were huge), our O-line only gave up one sack to them. Beat them 57-7, with the JV playing the 1st quarter gong 22-0. Now I cant wait for finals to be over so we can start our summer offseason workouts.

Good first day.
We may end up starting 9 Seniors on defense.
I like me D-line. Very athletic DE - 6'3" 245, Tough Ass DT 6'1" 255 good quickness for his size, former LBer. Several nice prospects at Nose. Best prospect is still in rehab from a knee injury from wrestling another big strong, high character kid. If he doesn;t back I have two underclassmen that can play.
All good kids, hard workers, no grade issues. Should be a really fun year. I think two, maybe all three, if the kid can recover from his injury, can play D-2, or D-3.
I'm tired and sore from running around like a maniac today! Getting old!

For goodness sake ccox, you've got nothing to complain about. Y'all should be just fine. Anybody with just one D-1 kid usually has a good year. But at QB and WR?-just throw the ball is all I got to say. OJW

All in all it was a wash. I moved a wr to qb and he got quality reps. We scrimmaged four teams and scored 11 times and the second defense gave up a TD. The bad was we lost our nose to a ACL injury. My center sprained his MCL . That gave a lot of young guys reps but was it really worth it?

having the time of my life.we lose a lot of guys next year. talked three hockey players into finally coming out for football now that their parent's NHL dreams are over. All three were a riot to coach and they loved it. Football is the one sport where a kid can come out as a senior and we can still make them into a player.these three are definite ballers and spring camp gave them a chance to see that.

Apparently I scared off about 10 guys, finished the two weeks of spring ball with 10 solid players, can't wait the 10 more days til we get our freshmen in. So what I really got out of it was running off the wannabes and getting some great conditioning in for the 10 that were there.
In case you look at this and think "god this guy is waiting on freshmen", I coach the Frosh/Soph team.

Just started Monday of this week (June 1st). We're going 2 platoon, so it's going to be an adjustment for some of our players. We have about 90 kids out, not including the 50 or so freshman. Defensively, we are much further along than we were at this time last year simply because we get more time. We have to replace 8 starters, but the effort is there. Right now, we're focusing on: -setting expectations for effort and attitude -creating an identity on defense -learning fundamentals (especially tackling) -learning/teaching new scheme (4-3 to 3-4) -getting to know our players (we won't make the depth chart public until our scrimmage week) Coachsky, where are you guys going to camp? Has your QB received any offers yet? See you in December!

Went about as expected... all 6 skill players on offense are seniors with zero playing time, while installing a new hurry up no huddle spread pass offense with some gun inside veer mixed in... kids struggled through it, got discouraged, but they kept pushing through, then a week after spring we had a breakthrough in 7 on 7 league and our D5 players shredded a D1 section power that has almost their entire starting defense ruturn... the kids were proud of themselves and I am extremely proud of them.
