How many of you have kids that Spat their shoes? Either with tape, pulling their socks over the shoe or sleeves that are being sold as spats?
According to NFHS Magazine they are now illegal adornments.
This post is from the NFHS officials website.
I noticed in the new issue of the NFHS quarterly magazine for officials they now consider spats on the shoes to be an illegal adornment. We had always allowed them in the past.

Doesn't spatting have a practical use as well? When I trashed my ankle the trainer spatted it upon my return.

Spats, when used correctly, can serve a purpose...it basically adds extra support to the ankle. The problem is that most kids who use them, use them to "look the part"...they want to look hip, cool, etc. So, it is understandable why they are being banned. The problem arises when a kid who is in the heat of the battle rolls his ankle in the middle of the game (1st quarter or after halftime)...a lot of times the trainer will just spat it right there on the spot so that the kid can get back into the game, if this is made illegal then that can't be done and the speed at which the kid can get back in is reduced.......seems that the "showtime" players are ruining the real reason behind spatting.

One time, our HC, told a kid that he didn't work really hard during the week and only let him spat one shoe. Told him..."you did half the work during the week you only get half the spat". Kid whined and ended up going without them. Interesting...still had a good game. It was a total show.

I'm old fashioned in a lot of ways, but this seems ridiculous. I mean, why ban this? Why make them illegal? Am I getting to liberal here or something? Why is anyone wasting time banning spats? Why do big dogs making the decisions care?

I am sure this company is very unhappy! They will probably raise a little Cain and get the ruling overturned. It is an interpretation and each state can rule on it any way they want. www.teamspats.com/ourproducts.html

Great rule! It was a waste of tape and just one more way for a kid to call attention to himself. Never allowed it.

Why not outlaw the ones which have limited to no athletic support (the pullover type) and still allow kids who need to wear spats for support purposes?

Our HC got reprimanded this year for using too much tape. We used 12 cases more tape than last year. The reason, we had to SPAT (I didn't know that's what it was called) about 20 kids shoes every game.
I'm not sure if it was for show or not. It was just plain white. The kids liked it because of the support and tightness. Two kids literally had to have it to hold their shoes together. I wonder if it will be illegal in IL

I've never liked "fashion and style" on the football field. We have a rule that no player is allowed to wear things or act in ways that draw attention to himself as an individual when he is with the team. I tell them, "If you try to wear that stuff, you are telling everyone else on the team that you think you are better than they are. That you have a right to do something that they don't. I explain that if you set yourself apart from the team, you aren't a part of the team. I don't have any trouble after I explain that.

I've always believed that if you look good, you feel good, and you play good. If a player thinks SPATS make them faster and gives them more confidence what's it really going to hurt? I feel the same way about the skinny bicep bands. Doesn't the NFHS have better things to do than decide what kids can and can't wear?

I thought the explanation for the rules for jerseys was pretty weak. Now they ban spats? Well I guess if the NFHS is so backwards it bans something as innovative as the A-11, it was only a matter of time before they banned spats.

I'd have to come down on the side of banning the non-tape spats, but leaving the tape option alone.
Our rule is if they want to be spatted, they need to bring their own tape. If they want to take the costs, then go for it.

We played a team this last year that had about a dozen kids with "designer' spats on. We beat them 42-0; I s'pose they should've been more focused on blocking and tackling, instead of the sh-t on their shoes. Plus, after the first quarter, the mud all over their asses was more noticeable than the spat on their shoe.
