I am thinking of starting a team to travel not this year but next year and was wondering how much it would cost. I would only be playing in SC, and I would be starting from scratch. I figure 25 players, which means I would have to get all equipment and everything.
I think that parents need this option here. The local league is failing to coach the kids properly and parents are asking for another option. I was thinking 10 and 11 year olds the first year, then maybe I could expand it.
Any help would be appreciated. I have talked to the local youth league and told them I will get a free clinic together for their coaches, but they don't want it. I had some HS coaches in SC interested in coming and speaking for free. Two are previous state champions. The youth league here is associated with any organization, so I would love to hear which one I should shoot for and how much insurance and other operating cost would be.

Coach:
I just recently heard from our head coordinator of our league that it costs them $2000/year for every single team. That is insurance, field, refs, all that stuff. It does not include the initial costs of equipment.

Ive started several Orgs from scratch one that got to about 400 kids, my current one is 75 kids
No way of telling you your costs until you find out: What your field rentals will be, they vary huge, We have paid zero - $550 per weekend with the average being about $200 What your travel costs will be if you are covering it What your league fees are, they vary huge Iv'e seen them from $400- $2000 per team with our average about $600 Equipment figure about $225- $250 per player, shelf life varies (Helmet 65, Shoulder pads 55, pants 20, pad pants 10, game pants 35, practice jersey 12, game jersey 45) Ins 400 per team Tons of odds and ends, advertising, postage, dummys, clinics, med equip, cones, trophies, banners, field gear, water bottles, balls, awards, highlight DVDs, etc etc that alone can easily be $1000 per team. Always start with the youngest age group and work up, not the other way around

I would say that you are looking at an initial cost of about $500 per player for uniforms and pads. Insurance really just depends on where you go to get it, I know the league we play in payed close to $8000 this season to insure 19 teams with a total of close to 500 players. That insurance covers all of our game fields and several practice facilities. We are paying I believe $125 a day for each official this season, but they will be doing 3 games. If you are only going to have one team playing I think you would be safe to figure $150 a game for officiating unless you are splitting the cost. I believe we also pay around $50 a game for a trainer to be on site which I think is really a must have, unless you are required to have an ambulance. The real cost of starting a brand new team is going to be for equipment, unless you have someone willing to donate it or you can use the equipment of a local high school. Equipment costs really have no ceiling, it just depends on what you get. You can get by with a some cones, a couple boards for the lineman, and a few handshields and really only spend a couple hundred bucks. I would estimate on the low end you are looking at about $15,000 for your first season if you get the bare minimum equipment.

What your league fees are, they vary huge Iv'e seen them from $400- $2000 per team with our average about $600 What services do the leagues provide that justify high fees? Are there some leagues that pay the game officials, and other leagues that expect the teams to work that out?

Hey Big, I have been working on about the same issue for some time now. I'm trying but I just don't seem to be getting anywhere with it. I was looking at home schooled athletes that can't play in public district's. I was looking at 1500 per . this is varsity select traveling around the great lakes area. I was thinking the parents fork over the 500 and the player goes out and gets sponsored for a grand. I know the basic inner state H/Sers ask about 600 per but they don't go out of state. Guess I'll have to seek out Dave a bit and bend his ear because I'm getting no-where with my quest. For me it's about getting the word out with no start up cash cause I'm broke and that's no joke. Best to ya!!!
