My question is two-fold. First I'm wondering how many of you have towers for your practice field. I just checked the price of solid scaffolding and it is pretty expensive(1500). We've talked about using telephone poles to build a more secure tower but that would be even more expensive I'm sure. One assistant recommended a deer stand for about 180bucks. The problem is that I don't want to tear up the game field with practice everyday but I want to film and watch at least 3 practices a week this year. I'm also concerned with safetey issues of having a tower on school ground. I know in college we had to roll the scaffolding to the game field everyday in order to lock it up. Also,I'm not a hunter so I'm not sure how safe one of these deer stands would be.
The second part is how many staffs utilize practice film and when exactly do you watch it as a staff/team?

It's probably cheaper to purchase and end-zone camera type rig than it is to build a tower. We have one, not sure what the exact name of it is, but you just turn a handle and it raises the camera into the air, you can film from ground level.

A team in our area has goal posts on their practice field. They built a platform that was kind of like a lean-to deer stand which rested on the cross bar.
We too have goal posts on our practice field.. but one butts up to the woods.. with about 10 foot of clearance..
I plan on doing the same thing..
Im going to have to think out the attractive nuisance problem.
One way is attaching some plywood on a hinge that could swing on and off of the ladder and be padlocked over the stairs.

at tri-pod deer stand would probably be your best bet. They are safe and probably light enough to move when you need to.

I agree they are expensive, but will be worth it. try googling my sports dreams, they do fast and no money up front football fundraising so you can get the equipment you want in a hurry.

How much do you utilize practice film? Im more of a Hatcher guy really. We try to get as much film as we can. Last year I didnt have anyone to film other than during the summer and 7 on 7. I think it really lends itself to helping show the players where they are doing thing right or wrong.

We have an end zone camera and use that to film practice.
before we got our end zone camera we have brought a 12 ft ladder. Leaned it on the cross bar and had an ADULT volunteer film from there. You can run from the 20 yd lie and get decent film.
Drawbacks; can't move the ball. Not as high as you want to get a really great view.
Works and is cheap/

Pay what you need to get a quality tower if you plan on using it on a regular basis.

we are in a situation where "our stands" are 6 rows high.true of a lot of teams in our league.useless for any meaningful film.we play some of our games in the university stadium and the film is great.would love to hear some relatively cheap solution to this problem. school will not build a proper coaches box.temporary scaffolds have medical-legal implications if left out and somebody falls from them.any other thoughts here??
