I once read the average HS football player is 5'10" 180# no-a-days.
So I figured our from last year: Skill: 5'10" 150 (biggest was 170) Line: 5'11" 210 (biggest was 280) Team: 5'10" and 180#

It would seem to me, however, that average players won't get average playing time. At least if you want to win.

Seems kinda silly to say "average FOOTBALL PLAYER" instead of "average back" "average lineman" "average reciever" etc.
our line up will look about like this:
qb 5 foot 8, 165 lbs fb 6 foot 1, 195 lbs rb 5 foot 10 180 lbs rb 5 foot 9 190 lbs center 6 foot 2 210lbs guard 5 foot 9 155 lbs guard 5 foot 8 170 lbs tackle 5 foot 9 215 lbs tackle 5 foot 11 220 lbs receiver 6 foot 160 lbs tight end 5 foot 10 170 lbs
whats our average?

you're gonna love this....
Our lineup: QB - 5'4" 105 TB - 5'9" 155 FB - 6' 2" 165 SB - 6'0" 150 TE - 6'0 185 SE - 5'8" 140 RT - 5'9 185 RG - 5'2 145 C - 5'8" 145 LG - 5'10 165 LT - 5'9 185
That's a varsity line up ya'll - not a youth team, and we managed to win games.
I'd love to have a couple of players that were "average".....

Coach, you put a kid who's 105 pounds on a varsity field... you're going to jail for child abuse. Keep a low profile...
But I agree that the "average" football player is pretty meaningless, I don't think anyone would argue that. 5'10" 180lbs sounds about right. We may have been a little taller by average, our LT and TE were both 6'4"... the 5'6" QB averaged it out somewhat though

I would have to agree with Touchdownmaker on this one. Even with that, having a certain average doesnt really mean much. Ive had (and Im sure everyone else) several lineman well above the average but didnt see the field and others that were well below the average that didnt come off the field.
Is there a way to measure the average Heart/Desire in a player? (I guess thats measured in the weight room, right?)

I say that if you put one foot in a bucket of ice and one in a tub of boiling water you average out to comfortable.

I agree with DCOhio about #4-11. We really can't change too much about "average" size but we work constantly on heart, desire and teamwork. We've all had our share of above average kids (size) with below average work ethic and heart.

I think depending on the size of the school each team has roughly equal numbers of studs. I think back to my time coaching a very small and traditionless 1A school and we usually had 1-2 kids who could play for anyone on our schedule. But our other 9-10 kids probably would not have played JV for the other schools.
Those studs cancel eachother out and now its up to the "average" players on the team to play above average.

We are a mid size 3A school in Minnesota and almost every team we play is bigger than us across the board. This is what we will look like in 09'.
QB 5'-11 170 FB 5'-9 190 RB 5'-9 165 RB 5'-9 155 WR 6'-2 165 WR 6'-2 170 Center 6'-4 260 OG 6'-3 230 OG 6-0 215 OT 6'0 230 OT 6'-0 215

I agree, heart and toughness, not to mention great ball smarts, that's how we can start a 105 pound QB and still manage to win games and keep him healthy. That's one of those things you can't measure in any tangible way.

Since I'm on a roll...
Being honary and disagreeable....
Let me preface my comments by stating... that there is nothing "average" about football players.
5'9" 170... is so inconsequential to the effectiveness of the player, to speak of the demographic is negate the essence of what makes football special.
5'9" 170... can be a line men at the highest level... and a benchwarmer at the lowest...
5'9" 170... can be the fastest kid on the team... and at the same time the slowest...
5'9" 170... can bench an ungodly 300lbs... or barely lift his weight...
5'9" 170 is not a tangible quantitative characteristic until you are at the collegiate level and beyond. 5'9" 170 doesn't matter until you've already determined that of all these fast people... I'd rather have 6'3 220 than 5'9" 170. Once you've realized that all of these linemen played at a high level... does 5'9" 170 become an issue.
Again... there's nothing average about football players...

Players 1-3 might "win" the game for you.
You try and coach players 4-11 (or 12, 13, 14, 15...) up so they won't LOSE the game for you.
