A player I coached called for some advice. He is a red shirt freshman at a D1 college. He is a walk on and has yet to play. He is thinking about transferring to another college or even JC to be closer to home. He says his parents have lost their jobs and not sure if they can afford the tuition. Can someone tell me in plain English what the transfer rule is from D1 to a smaller division. Does he have to sit a year? how many units before playing? Is loss of job considered a hardship by the NCAA? Thanks

he does not have to sit, as long as he is transferring down.
He just needs to be eligible, passing an average of 12 hours per semester for the previous fall and spring, and be able to be admitted to school.

going down you do not have to sit. going up you have to sit. going across you have to sit unless it is d3. you can transfer from one d3 school to another d3 school and play. if you are d2 or higher adn you transfer to another schoolnaother d2 school or d1 school you have to sit.

Thanks for the info. Sometimes when I read " Article 2 section 3 line E and F.." I like to check with someone experienced . I would hate to give the kid a bum steer. Thanks guys

the NCAA Manual makes the Tax code look like a book for children.
getting some one at the NCAA to answer one of your questions is like calling Dell Computer tech support and getting an english speaking person. aka a needle in a hay stack.

Airman has it right. I'm not sure if you need a release if you transfer down. I know if your transferring up, Divison I schools need a release.

You must have a release to talk to anyone!
Generally, if you’re now going full-time to an NCAA or National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) four-year school and you want to transfer to a different NCAA school to play, your current school’s athletics director must give written permission to the new coach or member of the athletics staff before you or your parents can talk with one of them. That’s called having a permissionto- contact letter.

Division 2 has a 1 time transfer rule, where you can transfer from d2 to another d2 without penalty

getting a relase at the D3 level is not difficult at all.
I was not aware of the D 2 one time transfer with no penality. I think it is a good thing personally. Kids going to d2 and d3 are going to get an education more then they are to play sports.
