I was sitting around today with the basketball coach talking about things that have happened in our careers where we immediately thought.. "Im about to get fired"
I told this story.. and wasnt sure if I told it on here before.. but figure I have to share..
Last spring I was in my first couple of months as a head coach.. well we had this girl decide to play football.
She wasnt one of those other side of the fence girls who is playing because she wants to be like the boys.. this was a girlie girl.. who I figured was playing because she liked being WITH the boys..
anyway..
She made it through spring and here we go getting ready for the spring game..
Well the jerseys we would normally wear were in bad shape and several needed replacing.. so we opted for the old school jerseys..
Well I had one of my assistants handing out jerseys while everyone else was getting things together..
We show up at the spring game.. and here came the girl off the bus.. and guess what number she was wearing??
Yep.. you guessed it.. 69..
I like to have lost it laughing.. but calmly went and asked the assistant what he was thinking.. and to PLEASE switch her jersey out with someone else..
His response was that being that we went with the old jerseys.. there were only a handful of linemen numbers.. and she was the last one in and that was all that was left..
The only thing that topped that was the time my DC was about to run some QB in scout team only to get to the line and find that she was the center.. older guy.. he said.. stuttering like he was very embarrassed.. "time out.. tttttime out.."

Wow, I can imagine. The boys (all boys) I've coached were all reluctant even to get near, let alone touch, each other's butts.

A MUCH less humorous, but valuable story here. First year coaching...18, coaching Frosh. I had the all too common big kid who didn't come off the ball. As a 1st year stupid A$$ 18 year old coach, I simply did what my previous coaches had done. He was in his stance, I put my foot on his rear, and I pushed to "help him" get off the ball. He makes contact with the DL, and then falls instantly to the ground, screaming and grabbing his neck. 3 practices into my career...and I was certain it was over...
Thankfully it was only a stinger.

Beer through my nose on that one (being Spring Break and all).
CoachD5085, that is some funny stuff.

Got lucky on that one.

True story--we had a player with the last name Klitz who wore 69. When we sent the jerseys to get the last name printed on, the printer wouldn't do it at first because he thought for sure we were playing a joke on him. We were under strict orders from the administration to not joke about it though...

The funny part for me, was the fact that "MR. Logic common sense and reason" kicked a kid in the butt. The fact that you were the one who did it is what caught me off guard.

We were under strict orders from the administration to not joke about it though... That's funny right there. We were opening up a new school and were haveing practices with just helmets and no shoulder pads during two-a-days. So I did what any offensive line coach would do I put the padded vests on (pushing the envelope) and did some 2 point explosion drills, you know put the hands in the chest make sure your head is down, tuck your knee under so you don't break a leg - the whole bit. Kid was taking the hit started moaning and writhing around on the ground....kind of a wuss so I gruffly told him to go see the trainer....kid came back to school the next day with a note from the doctor that explained that he could not play football for the rest of the year because he BRUISED HIS HEART! BRUISED HIS HEART! I thought for sure I was done with my career on that one.

We were recovering from one of those games where everything that could go wrong did, lose in a close one. These guys are Jr. High age, 12-14, and it's time for the "you ain't little boys anymore" speech. Start with the speech, get to the part about "You're not little boys anymore, you're becoming young men and I'm going to treat you as such. You guys got hair growin' in places where you ain't never seen it before and other things startin' to happen that never used to."
One of my favorite kids starts a little snicker. "Patrick what the heck is so funny?"
"Ah, coach, did you forget about Olivia?"
I hope I never see a girl on one of my teams again, one detail too many...

One of the first things I learned about equipment back in the day was NEVER order #69. Told to me by one of my favorite football mentors, among many other things that I am not allowed to put in this forum. Coachorr, the funny part WAS that it was 5085 that wrote that. Have lot of stories about coaches grabbing, touching, and saying stuff that they should not have. Have only had 1 coach fired over the years for being a total $#@hole. Great guy off the field and even during practice, but game time he was totally insane. Long story. OJW

OJW, yes, that is what I found so funny, because we all know 5085 to be a straight shooter. When I was reading that I could just picture this staunch well put together coach with his clip board in his hand and maybe a Jim Tressellike sweater shirt and tie with perhaps some neat looking sunglasses, just blowing a freaking gasket on a kid. That's what I thought was so funny about it.

In the North Bronx Youth Sports Ass'n that I coached in in 2007 (Co-op City Cowboys, Mighty Mites thru Pee-Wees; No. Bx. Rough Riders, 12U w no weight limit thru 18U), I kept thinking we did have a girl on the JrPWs because we had one boy with a pony tail and whose facial features seemed uncannily female to me. I kept referring to him as "she", and because nobody else made that mistake I must've been confusing to others. And then once I was corrected I kept glancing at him because I had trouble believing, which may have made him feel uncomfortable if he noticed; and even when I wrote this sentence the first time, I kept writing "her"!
In 2007 I coached with the Gun Hill YSA Rebels, and was told that the teams in the NBYSA would be on our schedule, and that they now do have a female player (Or was it two?). When the Rebel PWs found out, they wanted to know from me what would happen if they hurt her. I asked them, what if she hurts you? That shut them up. (I also told them I follow women's football, which is true.)
On the subject of staring inappropriately as related to football, I went to a road game of a varsity coach's I was corresponding with on Delphi's single wing forum (Pete Kopecky of Glen Cove HS). I found the home team's band leader (dressed as a hippie/flower child, because it was Floral Park HS, get it) very attractive and kept looking at her. I figured her to be faculty, because it's common for a school band leader to be faculty. I found out later she was a student who I guess just looked very mature. Whether she saw me looking I don't know, because dark glasses were part of her costume.
Not as bad as the time I kept staring at someone who looked to me (but to nobody else) amazingly like a certain person I associated with the place who'd died 2 yrs. earlier, but that's another story.

In HS, my OL coach kicked a player in the rear to get him off of the ball. He kicked too low and caught him in the crotch. Didn't get in any trouble, but probably would've gotten his rear kicked if he hadn't made so much contact...that kid was steaming mad and crazy.
My dumb coaching mistake that luckily didn't bite me in the rear #1...for the first six years I coached I would dress as the best player we had to face, once a year. Coaching middle school I obviously didn't go anywhere near full tilt, but if a kid had gotten hurt falling over his shoelaces with me on the field in pads, I would have been finished.
My dumb coaching mistake that luckily didn't bite me in the rear #2...This year, no pads, I was lined up at receiver to make the DB's respect our pass game (seventh grade scrubs couldn't catch at all). They called a sweep to my side and the DE wouldn't come up the field like he was told. So I ran to his back and set up a basketball screen on him. He ran straight into me and landed on his rear. He started crying about his knee. Long story short, he was being a crybaby...and I crapped myself for nothing.
I think the "coach puts pads on" became a ritual for the kids, something they looked forward to in our program. They would ask me all season "Coach, when are you putting on the pads?"

is it illegal or just "not in good sense" for a coach to put on pads?

i'm not aware of a law per se, but i can definitely see how it could be a big insurance liability.

Just commonsense usually, but a coach putting on pads is just asking for trouble. We've talked about this before though. Some districts have it in writing-do this, get fired.
I am always on the lookout for coaches physically contacting guys now. I know, I know, I'm an old guy and I remember how it used to be. I remember how it used to be COACHING in the so called "Old days."
But that's now how it is anymore. You put on pads and let anyone get as much as a sprained fingernail by you and it could cost you your job. Hurt a kid while wearing gear, and it might cost you your house.

is it illegal or just "not in good sense" for a coach to put on pads? I think "not in good sense", but I was young and dumb, and most of the guys I worked under lived by CTA (Cover Their A's). Didn't give a flip about helping me out. Three different HC's in that time and not one said "hey coach, might want to rethink that decision".

I am a youth coach. So, I have to constantly be on guard about other coaches or myself demonstrating anything a bit to enthusiastically. Only had one real problem with it. A big, strong coach at a different age level hit one of my players with a tackle dummy with way too much force. He claimed that he was toughening them up by demonstrating how the opposing team was going to treat them. Earlier in the season this same guy had shoved one of my players into the ground head first while demonstrating how to play NG. I thought I had the issue straightened out the first time. But, obviously, I didn't. After I saw that second incident, I charged over there and made it very clear to him that he was never to come anywhere near one of my players ever again. And, of course, just the opposite can happen. Anyone remember this thread? coachhuey.proboards42.com/index.cgi?board=general&action=display&thread=24969&page=1#227760I still get a good laugh at some of us coaches that were trying to go that extra mile for our teams. I think we realized that we already had too many miles on us.

A coach at a rival school would put on the pads every week with a jersey that said "Fear this!" One of his assisants who could not stand him, took a picture and sent it to me. Needless to say, this coach was not there very long.

We had a youth team in our area that was having a bad first half. They get to the halftime break, the coaching staff mulls over what to do, one of the assistants said "I know what to do" and had them hitting one on one during halftime. One broken arm and a knee sprain later they knocked it off after losing two starters.
Don't know if anyone got fired but the HC and whoever had that brain storm should have been canned on the spot. Unbelievable.
