Guys, just wondering if anyone is running a program at a school with block scheduling. Even periods one day and odd the next. Periods are 120 minutes I believe. It seems like one week you would see the kids 3x and then the next week 2x. Please give me details how you are doing it both in season and out of season

This is an A/B schedule for block scheduling.
Are you referring to weight program? an athletics period program? what type of program are you referring to?

there is a HS in our district that is on a 7 period block schedule. They go to 1st period M,T,TH,F for about 65 mins then they go to 2,3,4 on M and TH and 567 on T and F. They then go on Wednesday 2,3,4,5,6,7. this works very well for them and have their weights program during 6th period. this is by far the best block program in the county

In Utah we had that... not here in my part of CA.
Odd Days Boys = 7th period weight-training Girls = 7th period athletics
Even Days Boys = 8th period athletics Girls = 8th period athletics
Must play a sport to get into either 7th or 8th period classes. All other students take weight-training classes periods 1-6, while all athletes take core classes and electives other than PE during 1-6. There was no difference between the 2... just what it said on the schedule. Both days identical really.
During football, we lifted last class of each day, then had meetings right after school with practice after the meetings.
Basketball coaches had us start practice during last class, then lift after practice was over.
I am going to be fighting to get a 1st period weightlifting class here, so the kids lift early in the morning, have all day to recover, then practice after school.

I love the block schedule - I personally am also trying to get out weight training class to MWF 1st period.
This way they can lift early and be rested and also because then they can lift pretty hard MW and still have 60 hours until friday night game.

So you guys are doing a true a/b schedule... well for the 3x week its good - for the other week not so good....
My recommendation would be lift heavy if you get a 3x week and light if its a 2x week...
or if you are getting a 2x week make sure you lift hard on Saturday after your Friday game...

We started a "zero" hour class. We begin before school so we get five days of work in and aren't affected by testing, shortened periods, assemblies, etc. We got the administration to give the kids a credit. We did have to open it to all kids. We ended up with most of our varsity two deep and one girl's basketball player. It is working for us.

what i am saying is that one week i would see the players 3x and the next week 2x. It is an athletic period. Then make Saturday a requirement on 2x weeks... Not going to see improvements on those weeks where you are only doing 66% of the "normal" workout.

We do a version of block at my school.
Kids go to Math and English/Reading everyday for 90 minutes. They go to Science one day for 90 minutes, and the next day go to Social Studies for 90 minutes. They then have three 45 minute electives, so we get to see our athletes everyday. Here is what a kids schedule might look like.
8:00 - 9:30 - English 9:30-11:00 - Math 11:00 - 1:00 Science/Social Studies (lunch included) 1:00-1:45 Study Skills 1:45-2:30 Choir 2:30-3:15 Athletics

For in-season, I would make one of the workouts on the 3x a week a speed and agility workout. Probably going to get in a lot of that through drill work anyway, so only doing it in class once every two weeks shouldn't be a big deal. And, your lifting program will be consistent as it will always be two lifts a week.
Off-season, I would find a way to get the "necessary" lifts in in two workouts, so that those lifts are consistent as well. You could stick to making that third workout of the week speed and agility or make it some sort of competition day. Either way, unless you can get the 0 period another coach mentioned, I would focus on how to get your workout in in only two class periods a week.

Weird. When I was a soph in HS we switched to block scheduling, but all that meant was four 90 minute classes a day for one semester, then 4 different ones the following semester. Teachers got one of those as a free period. It replaced an older system with 6 different 1 hour classes a day for the entire school year, with only 1 as a free period for teachers. It made sense and worked well for just about everybody, especially for athletics, but teachers had to really manage the classes to keep from falling way behind. The US History class I took didn't even get to WWII This A/B thing sounds really screwed up...

I'm lucky the last few places Ive been at are on semester block schedule system. 4 Classes one semester, and then 4 different (except for some kids weight training) the next semester.
Thats 8 classes a year, meaning that if a kid takes care of business in the class room there is no reason he cant have year round wt. training as a soph and jr. With 90 min class periods it shows up in the long run.

A solution might be to condense the lifts from three days to two and drop a couple of the less important ones in the 2X week.
We currently have the A/B block schedule. We will be starting weight training class next year, haven't done it yet, so my advice is untested.......

On A-B block (assuming 8 classes per year/4 per day), see if you can get them double blocked so you get them 5 days per week like carookie suggested. There is always a way; great adjustment by the guys in Montana with the zero hour!

I know a lot of schools that have zero period for Athletic lifting and running from 7am till 7:45 so kids could shower before school. Our Kids grades where actually better after we started this as they where more awake and ready for School.

we are in block schedule- 84 min periods. I take all of my pe classes to the wt room for 30 minutes then we do skills and games and that stuff. Has helped some with getting more kids interested in lifting. on the negative side, It does make some of the fballers uncomfortable to train serious in front of the goof offs.

I have worked uner the block schedule for three years now and have had great results even though I only saw the kids twice every other week. I did full body workouts everyday. Mon/Tue were heavy everything and then Wed/Thur was more of a dynamic workout. Friday I used as a functional and strong man training day with a little review of one of the Olympic lifts. I always did a dynamic warm-up and then did either agility drills or speed drills before going in the weight room.
Fall 07' Varsity football team had 4 kids that could Power Clean 200 or more! As of yesterday (max week this week) we had 13 Freshman Cleaning 200 or more) Using Block Scheduling.
Hope this helps!
