We have about 25-30% participation.
Second part, do you "like" your players? I mean we all love them, but do you LIKE them meaning their persona

We are a large school - 2000 students, approx. 1000 boys. We are at about 20%. I love my players, and I really LIKE at least 95% of them.

about 25%-- do I like them, yeah most of the time. probably less than when I started and I attribute that to changes in parenting - when the parents show disrespect to the coach then the student/athlete will pick up on that. Parental disrespect has changed dramatically in the 30 years that I have coached.

About the same as you.
A lot of ours act goofy and immature, but I like all of them. All of the bad attitude kids have weeded themselves out.
Our school has a little under 100 boys, and in three years, I've had over 100 quitters. And I've been following the "Tighten the screws slowly" philosophy! We are just now reaching the level of discipline and hard work that other schools require.
I can't go anywhere in town without running face to face into a quitter or the parents of one.

We have about 150 boys in our school, and about 40 of them play football.
About 27% of the population.
I usually only can't stand about 1-2 players.
The rest of them couldn't date my future daughter, but they are a blast.

Not enough!
Generally I like all our players, there were a few last year that I liked alot less than years past but overall we get some pretty good kids year in year out.

25% to 30%.
We have a school of 400, so roughly 200 boys. 60 played football last fall.

What % would you let date you daughter?
We have about 150 kids, 30 football players, and 1-2 I don't like and 1-2 I hope my son turns out like.

Don't worry, at some point your daughter almost certainly will date one of your players - both of mine did. Interesting dynamic.

1200 boys at the school (2400 students at the school). We've had almost 200 football players before. The number right now is about 150. The varsity players I like. A small number, 3 or less, are complete turds. My focus is on the others that will make an impact on the community. We have tried with the turds....some of them don't get it. Could read about them in the police blotter some day.

About 60 boys in school 25-35 play football in a given year so we're dancing back and forth across the 50% line.

about 15-16% of our 700 boys play football, but only 1/4 of those are actually football players.

185 kids in school. About half are boys. We had 40 players last year. We should be close to that this year. I love them all. We ask and get an incredible about of time and effort out of our players. I don't take that lightly. These kids sacrifice a lot, mostly because we have convinced them that it is necessary for them to be successful. I love every one of them. I like all of them most of the time. A couple can make a bad choice or two. A couple are products of bad parenting. I miss most of them when they are gone.

1200 enrollment so probably 600 boys and we had 76 last season, so about 12 or 13 %.
Part 2: yeah, I think I like them all - some more than others, but I think that's pretty normal

About 130 boys in the HS, about 35-40 play football. I like almost all of our kids. This group that graduates in June I have coached since they were in MS so I really got to know and love all of them.

Just wondering -- are you guys counting only supervised football? And even then, are you counting football played on other than school teams?

We had our official football sign up meeting yesterday and our numbers were considerably less than last year. We are a small school so you really feel it when the numbers are low. Last year we had about 42, but we only had 31 at the sign up meeting. I was pretty discouraged all day yesterday. Well, we have morning lifting on M,W,F because all but three of the guys play a spring sport and we don't have lifting class during the day. Anyway, As they are lifting I realize that even though we only had 31 and the sign up, we got the right 31. These guys are busting their butts at 6:30 in the morning and then they go and have a two hour practice after school every night. They are really working hard and developing into a tight group. Just wanted to say that sometimes it is not about the numbers of players, but more about who the players are.

1400 students - about 650 boys 125 out for FB
We love and like them all.....so far.
The weeds are weeded out in the spring. We also DO NOT anybody join our program after the 3rd official day of practice unless they are new to our school. That has helped maintain the weed free environment.

We have approximately 250 students in grades 9-12 and about 125 boys. We had 49 out for fb two years ago, 48 a year ago, and 40 this past season. We are anticipating 45-50 next year. I guess that works out to about 35-40% of the boys in our school playing football.
I love the guys in our program right now. They work hard, they are coachable, and they are fun to work with. Also, they love to compete.

varsity football/jv football/freshman football - not counting clubs or touch football on the weekend I wasn't thinking about touch, but rather tackle without pads, adult sup'v, etc. But if we were to limit it to formal, supervised, padded tackle football, how would some of your percentages change if you were to count play on teams that weren't school extramural teams -- i.e. school clubs or unaffiliated clubs or other programs? My sense is that in most of the country, an overwhelming percentage of organized tackle football played by teenagers is on official school teams (frosh, JV, varsity), and that I'm in an exceptional area where other types of organized football for teens are a significant percentage. I'd be interested in knowing whether I'm wrong or what other parts of North America are like this.

Total Enrollment of about 475 about 220, we have averaged around 115 in our program for the last 3 years.
As far as my players, I am very lucky to not only have talented kids but good kids also.

Darn, you're right, I'm still used to Usenet and other tree-threaded forums where this issue doesn't come up, even though I've been participating in a lot of Web boards lately.
