You guys will just love this.
I have all sorts of things posted in our weight room including our roster with positions next to each boys name. one of my TARZAN kids who never lifts with the team comes in and says "THATS where you have playing???" (offensive line/defensive line) as the young man wants to be a fullback "or quarterback".
I said "remember, its not about you, its about where we need you to play" and I continued to discuss with the lad about the importance of lifting and getting faster/stronger and of course he could compete for fullback if he was a fit.
he said "I know but I dont like offensive line"
and I say "well, theres always soccer"
I kid you not, the kid says "I wish we had a soccer team soooo bad"
Sometimes TARZAN just cant play football. This is the same boy who told me "I dont do August".

Hang up your spurs on that one. Until he finds the desire in himself, you are just wasting time.

I blame the kids parents as they are always telling this kid that he is a star - they do not support the program or the coaches in any sport. The kid misses school and practice in all sports to do other things as mom has him totally overscheduled. I also blame his youth and ms coaches to some extent. He should have been taught well before hs ball that if you do not commit you might as well quit. Hes really something, nice enough kid who just doesnt get the team concept in any way shape or form. Ill not give up on him but I promise you and everyone else, if hes at the bottom of our points earned he will not play anything more than mop up duty - talent aside.

It sounds to me like you've made every effort to reach this kid. It may be time to let him stumble, fall, suffer the consequences, and learn a lesson.
For us, if you don't go through summer practice and 2-a-days, you don't dress until game 4. Everyone else had to practice for 5 weeks before their first game, and so it will be with anyone coming out late. That does not apply to seniors - I won't accept them late.
If I was at a bigger school with greater numbers, I wouldn't do it that way at all. I wouldn't accept anyone late, but here, we have about 20 kids on the team. Some of those are the ones I allowed to come out late last year and the year before. They paid their dues and now they've bought in. That's an avenue I can't afford to cut off in this time and place.

Reminds me of the HC at my second school. This monster of a sophomore showed up 4 days after the start of camp. Being the sophomore OL/DL coach I was pumped. I'm talking 6'4" 300 pounds. That's just BIG. The HC came up to me and said "Looks like Tarzan, plays like Jane." Sure enough the first contact drill the monster participates in would be his last. I later found out this kid had only made it through one complete football season, that was in 7th grade. Looks like Tarzan, play like Jane.

We've all dealt with kids like this, and it is frustrating, but at some point you just have to let it go and allow the kid to prove he has made the decision not to get on the field. When I started at my current school, we had a RB returning who started as a sophomore. By his senior year, his practice habits and lack of understanding Team had him standing on the sidelines. It is unfortunate, but to continue to play him would have taken away all of our credibility as a new staff and the culture we have been creating. We had many discussions between the player and myself, the OC and his position coach, and we would see flashes of what he could be, but he just couldn't/refused to do the things we asked of him and all players consistently. Although we don't cut anyone, for all intents and purposes he cut himself and quit, even though he never turned in his gear.

I think the point system I use really just reinforces the things that we want....I can see so clearly who does what I ask all of the time, who does it sometimes and who rarely does it and who never does it. Its pretty evident. This kid has the ability to out test most of my kids but doesnt out invest any of them. Hes quit once before and I am pretty sure he will quit again. I just hate to leave a kid in a position where he lives the rest of his life with regrets.

Catch up with him tomorrow and pin him down. Witnesses wouldn't hurt. Then next fall you can tell his high-brow parents, "Sorry, but he officially quit at 9:44 a.m. on Thursday, March 5."

I saw Tarzan run by our weight room today. He couldnt have run faster if he was on Deon sanders shoulders. I kid you not he was terrified that one of our kids or coaches would see him and comment to him. I did hear him speak of losing a basketball game by some 50 points the night before though. So much for being a basketball superfreak.
Ah well, when I see him on the sidelines next Friday night Ill give him 3 bucks to get me a cheeseburger and a diet pepsi. Ill tell him to keep the change.

I respect you're commitment to the kids coach, but sometimes they make your decision for you. I agree with you though, I hate it when a kid does something you know he'll regret when its too late.

Tarzan did some lifting for me this past weekend. As predicted he was among the top tier of players (unfortunately he is also on the failing list for grades) - I believe that as of right now , he has no clue if he really wants to play football or not.
Hes only a 10th grader so calling him a "turd" or any of those other things doesnt quite feel right. I think he needs to grow up and needs to have the right buttons pushed. I havent yet found those buttons. What I will not do however is stroke his ego and kiss his rear end like so many others before me.
