I know there are some of you out there that have practice days split up, one day offense, one day defense. We are a small school with many players playing both ways facing a cut in our practice time and I am looking for the pro's and con's of doing that. We have always done part of the practice offense and part of it defense. I am just wondering with a decreased practice time if it would be best to dedicate all of one day of the week to one side of the ball and the next day the other. This would be my possible schedule:
Mon-Offense focus, possibly defense formation fits/adjustments(15 min) Tues-Defense focus, possibly offense review(15 min) Wed-Off/Def split as usual Thurs-Walk-through A segment of special teams everyday.
What have been your experiences? What are the pro's/con's? How does each way effect learning and retention of game-plan?
One big con I can see for example is if our middle linebacker is sick the defensive day that could really put us in a bind!

We do this and it works well for us. I would say make sure that you do a full team period of O or D on the opposite day. That way if someone does miss a practice at least they will get reps the next day at it, if if it's just a 20 min team period. If you have a solid system on both sides of the ball, and game plan instead of do wholesale changes every week then you should be fine.

I agree with wingtol about the 20 min period on the opposite day. We used this same format one year when I was in high school, and monday was nothing but offense with the exception of a 20 minute defensive period at the end. It went pretty well for us, and our guys could just focus on one position that day.

This is essentially what we do too and we like it. We have at times changed our practice schedule to accomaidate someone if we knew they were sick or something and only were a factor on one side of the ball. But what mostly happens is Johnny got sick (the puss) and went home. we aren't that radically different from week to week so it kid wouldn't have missed too much anyway... of course, I'm still b!tchin about it, but if I didn't have that I would find something else LOL

We used to practice that way but now practice both Off & Defense everyday. I just think our guys retain what we are doing if they see it everyday. When we were doing it every other day it just seemed that our checks and such were not as well remembered. We had to whittle down our package even more and it is little enough. plus we are an option wing-t team offensively and we need to have those reps everyday as well. I just feel by experience that if we get 10 minutes each day it works better for us that 20-30 minutes every other day. We practice down and distances on one day each ie Monday is formations adjustments and checks Tuesdays are first and ten, short yardage/goal line, Wednesdays are third downs etc... You need to be organized a little more possibly but it works for us. We have a manager as our period timer and they blow an air horn to change periods that helps.

Here's what we do:
Monday- Lift, film, scouting report/game plan
Tuesday- Offense + ten minutes of defense (usually tackling)
Wednesday- Defense + ten minutes of offense
Thursday- Lift, walk-throughs
STs every day.

We followed that plan last year. Monday was gameplan, and offense. Tuesday - Defense, and Wednesday we split. Thursday walk-through. I am been leaning toward making everyday a split with a focus on each Day. Monday Pass. Tuesday Inside Run, Wednesday we would work Everything. Just trying to see what fits. We have a lot playing both ways as well.
