Our state association passed a rule this year that during the week of our state organized clinic, there shall be no contact between athletes and coaches from that Mon to Fri.. They feel that attendance is down due to many coaches staying behind to run off season workouts..
Now to me.. its good because my anniversary always falls on that week..
but several coaches I have talked to about it said they will try to get around it.. by opening the weightroom and "letting" the kids come up on their own.. which really opens up some legal issues if one of them gets hurt..
My question to you is.. how do you feel a week off from everything really effects what you are trying to do?
Do you think the kids will "lose" anything from this week off?
Some of these same guys who are up in arms about this do not require their kids to come up on Thanksgiving or Christmas break.. so..

We have a 2 week dead period in Tennessee. No contact between coaches and players, and players can't use school facilities, ie weightroom.

I think the dilemma is that most coaches allow 3-4 missed workouts (about a weeks worth) for family vacations and such. Now, if a kid takes a family vacation for a week that does not coincide with the "dead week", a kid might be missing 6-8 work outs, which could be 1/3 of the summer work outs. (Around six weeks here in LA right? )

If your kids have been working hard since December than a week off will not do anything but help...
We open practice August 10th and I am going to give all our players and coaches off the week of August 3rd... They need that week to recover physically and emotionally. So I think a week off is good just to recover... This is not the "Old days" when kids just worked out from May - August... Kids are going year around week intervals are good for them...
We have been lifting since 12/1/2008... We are testing this week and we are CLOSING the weight room the week after... GIve them a week off to recover and get fresh again.. .We will do this again in Late May before we get ready for the summer push. My strength coach is CSCS certified and has worked for professional teams. I will take his advice on this one.

Michigan has a mandated dead week with this being the 3rd year (I think). We can have no contact with our kids at all, including opening the weight room. Our school (& league) put it around the 4th of July. The idea is to spur tourism. Our state legislature mandates that we start school after Labor Day too (for tourism) which puts us in school until the 2nd week of June. With the dead week, school going late and starting practice Aug. 10, we have about 7 weeks in the summer. What sucks is you get things going for 2 weeks, then take a week off. I push our parents to use that time as their vacation too.
At first I thought it was terrible, but I have grown accustomed to it and actually try to go on a little vacation then. Of course, so does everyone else!

I have been hearing rumors that Minnesota will be going to a dead period this summer. It sounds like it will be around the 4th of July.
We have always gave our kids a week off anyways, so It should not be a huge factor for football. Volleyball, swimming and basketball will be another story!!! Our kids in those sports are so fried by time they are juniors and seniors because they go about every day possible year around that they can.

In IL, I believe your summer programs have to end July 31st, so there is a "dead period" from August 1st to the first day of practice which this year I believe will be August 12th. A lot of programs, if not the majority, also give the week of July 4th off although there is no rule to do that.
We are also "limited" to 25 on the field workouts, although I use the word "limited" loosely because you can go three or four times a week throught June and July and still not hit your 25 limit until the end of the summer.

Does anyone try to "educate" your families as to this would be a GREAT week to take that family vacation? Inform them early! May take a few years, but if you plan your training around this week as being off it can be a benefit.

we do the same. In our state we officially start about the 3rd week of August and we have to be finished up with our FB stuff (7on7s, camps, practice drills, etc) by August 1st. We can lift and run them from Aug 1 to when we start (usually around the 15th to 20th of Aug). Not really a dead week but a time when coaches need to stop coaching FB related skills.
I always tell my parents to plan the family vacation the first week of August. By the time their players are juniors or sophomores they "get it."

I guess our association was looking at 5-8 contact days per sport for the entire summer, but could not agree on the number of days. Strength and agility does not fall into this.

Georgia has a dead week for the 4th of July. I think it started two years ago.
Never affected our guys, we already implemented that very same off-week years before.
The one year we had workouts that week the attendance was horrible. I think we had six guys one day, we averaged like 25 a day that summer. Remember that I coach middle school, but the rule is the same for high school.

I give my guys 3 1 week breaks starting with the last week in May and running through right before we start practice in August. Players and coaches need time to enjoy summer and get a mental and physical break from football- it's a long grind from August till November/December with no chance for a "break".

Some schools get around it by having all players workout at a gym in town with a senior or two keeping up with a sign in sheet. I encourage families to take their vacations during this time, but it doesn't always work. In TN. we also have a three week dead period at the end of the season, as well as a two week dead period at the 4th of July. I give kids our kids a running program to do over this break, and then I test as soon as the break is over.

August 31 kicks of a two week dead period in Maine. It certainly adds a challenge for any kid who hasn't been active in our summer program. We play in two 7 on 7 leagues and open the weightroom twice a day in June and July. Those kids who were active all summer can use a respite before the season. It puts another barrier in front of any kid who has vanished.
The weight room, which is located at the HS and open to the community, stays open during the dead period. It is just run by people other than the football staff.

We have a two week dead period the last two weeks of June. Complete lockdown no contact with kids. It started last year and it was a good break. We have two weeks of spring ball the last two weeks of May, then we go to a team camp the second week of June, we then have the two week dead period and we start mandatory lifts the first week of July, we then start official practice the first Monday in August.

We don't have a mandatory dead week during the summer in NC. We do give the guys off a week so we go can go to the NC coaches clinic.

Just recently, a proposal was put out to have spring ball in NC with June being a dead period for any football activities. Weight room I believe was still allowable.

Our section in California has a mandated 21 - day dead period during the summer. The only thing that can be conducted is the weight room, during that time period. it is when we tell our players to go on vacation, it is when the coaches go on vacation. it refreshes you before the grind of another season.

I don't see any disadvantage to a dead period.
Heck, I can use the break myself!
My schedule this year: Spring ball May 18-22.
Weight room open in the AM and PM from May 26th up to July10th. Players are expected to attend 4 days a week, and have a total attendence of 75% (first year in this program, that % will increase anually).
I've mandated that the kids take off the 3rd and 4th weeks in July. No weight room opening, the kids shoud rest up and take vacation with their families. I call this period "fishing time".
We'll be starting practice offically on July 27th, giving us 4 weeks before our scrimmage Aug.28.
Seems so close already!

I think the Dead week is good, you can get around a lot of stuff but in GA not the Dead Week, Nothing can be open. Your kids are still kids!

In Kentucky we have a 2 week dead period. Good timing around the 4th of July. No weight room. No contact. Vacation time.

In WI we are only allowed five contact days with the kids! This means we can only have five days over the summer where we can teach football specific skills. This of course does not include strength and conditioning. Some people in our state then wonder why we have so few kids from our state earning DI scholarships, the WIAA is hamstringing the football programs here! Basketball, baseball, and hockey have unlimited contact time.

We have a dead period as well. I realy dont think it will have any negative effects on the kids. If anything it will be a benefit because they can get rested up because after its over, the grind begins. We as coaches still have to remember that these kids are kids! As obssessed as we may be about the game, not all of them have that high of a passion for it. A couple of us coaches may meet once or twice to make sure everything is ready to roll but it gives us a little time to get whatever we need done outside of football. Especially in Ohio. We have 3 straight weeks of two-a-days this year (Begins Aug. 3 with first game being the 28th).
If you are realy worried about your kids losing "anything". Send them home with some handouts or a DVD with pre season camp footage (we get x amount of days of contact during the summer) for them to review.
