It seems as though the AAU type handlers are creeping their way into football and starting to cause problems around the country. The NYTimes had an article about Bryce Brown and his adivsor. This guy is a moron and it is scary how he has so much influence in Wichita. THis quote here sums up his intellignce. Butler said he would explore the possibility of Brown’s skipping college and going to the Canadian Football League next season if approached by a team. He mentioned the idea of a team paying Brown $5 million a year for three years. But the salary cap for entire C.F.L. teams is $4.2 million Canadian. Here is the link www.nytimes.com/2009/02/04/sports/ncaafootball/04recruit.html?_r=2

Nothing more then adult leeches who are generally in it for themselves and not any kid- they end up hanging themselves in pretty short order.
Reading that article it's very clear that guy has zero integrity.

The NCAA is going to have to step in and stop this kind of thing. It is almost as if they have agents before they have ever done anything in college. Its gotten pretty ridiculous in basketball, especially with the "one and done" kids, now its spilling over to football.

“I’m doing a dang good job,” Butler said. “I know that I’m the most connected guy in Wichita and probably in Kansas. Probably in the Midwest, and let some people tell, probably in the dang nation when it comes to high school recruiting.”
Obviously this guy has never heard of Ted Ginn, Sr. Freakin' Kansas...

My team was at the Pitt State camp that the article refers to and there was Bryce Brown walking around with his "U" backpack the whole time and when kids asked why he wasn't playing in the camp he said his handlers didn't want him to get hurt. Wichita East had a lot of talented kids but we not disciplined. Their coach almost got into a fight with the HC at another school because of a block.
This whole situation really is too bad. Am I a dying breed who thinks that if you are good enough you will get seen wherever you are (while realizing that there is typically more coverage at larger and more successful schools)?

Are you kidding me? How does this sort of thing happen? How can a parent or a student-athlete fall into such a trap? Can someone please explain their reasoning? After seeing this Butler guy, I would never take sporting advice from him...except on maybe a donut eating contest. What a freakin joke!

^^^^Hilarious.
I think the most telling thing is what the HC says about his team going 6-3 with Brown. I saw the same thing here with Chris Wells - best player in the USA and his senior year the "team" went 5-5.

Donuts! Are you kidding me! Butler is 5'9" 350. That's a top athlete, I don't care who you are. I heard he got a football scholarship from Miami.

Guys I am from Wichita and we have to deal with this guy on the local talk radio and tv all the time. I worked with the OC that coached this player. The player never went to 7 on 7, summer weights, anything with his teammates. The team that he played on was 6-3 in a weak league and failed to make the playoffs. They had all kinds of internal issues. Good staff too. The handler spoke a few weeks ago on the radio and was asked about the commitment to Miami that Brown has. He said that they committed last year to see which schools were really interested in Brown. The schools that honored the commitment and backed off were taken off the list. If I were Miami I would think twice about a kid that is using them as leverage to see if there is something bigger and better. This has been a major issue with the Kansas coaches in the local area. Bad deal for sure.

Was anyone else put off by the fact that there seemed to be a concept that if Miami offered then we better as well? If this is the due diligence of the average college coach in recruiting, then I have lost A LOT of respect for those coaches and the process. Does anyone with more insight know if that's really a part of the process? Sure I can understand checking out a kid that you caught wind a marquee program might be interested in, but when you look at the film, that ought to tell you right there whether or not the kid is worth pursuing. I would be willing to bet that the best in the business don't worry about what others are doing and focus on their needs and who fits.

What if this kid goes to Canada, gets the money and spends it all. And God forebid he gets hurt bad and can't play again ever. What does he have then. These guys that tell players they are all that are junk. Heard a guy tell a player from another school 2 years ago, you could be in the NFL in three years if you get with me to train you. The kid and his parents were taking the guy serious, and I wanted to say something but I wasn't coaching at either school, nor did I know the family or the guy but it looked shady. The kid was a D2 prospect at best and didn't get in a D2 because of grades. He didn't have NFL size or speed, but his family was convinced this guy could get him there. I can only imagine when you are the top player in the country.
Guys like this should be put on a list and ordered to stay away from kids. This is why education is no longer valued in this country, people only see money. Just like the top BB player last year that skipped college to play in Greece. Heard him say the other day that it is nothing like his agent promised and he wished he would have went to school.

We had a basketball player here in Wichita several years ago named Korleone Young. Young was one of those high school players that entered the NBA draft. He was drafted not in the 1st round like his handler told him he would be and ended up in 2nd round to Detroit. After a very short- less then a month NBA stay he bounced from country to developmental league. He is not out of basketball. Has no education and left thinking about what would have happened if he had gone to school. I can see the same situation with Brown. Now Brown was quoted in the paper today that it was a joke and the NYTimes ran with it. People are also all over the Head Coach for his quotes in the article. Bad situation.

Coaching at the college level sounds exciting, but having to go through an "adviser" like this would embarrass me. I imagine a scenario where a top college coach would have to walk sideways and speak in the proper manner, like that Soup Nazi episode of Seinfeld. Do it wrong, and you're out.

The player shown in Brophy's post above is a player I know all to well. Butler told his father that his son was D-1 material... in 7th grade. When he arrived to play HS football, the player was placed on the freshman team, with all other freshman. The dad took his son from the freshman workout and told the HC there was a mistake, his son should be a varsity. The HC explained that NO freshman has ever played varsity, and never will. If his son worked hard, stayed with the program, then MAYBE as a Junior. Like Bryce, he refused to attend weights, was un-coachable and had a single purpose...himself.
Good news, (bad for someone else) he transfered to another school in the area at semester (to be eligible under KS HS rules)to play on a team where the dad was told his son could start varsity.
So far, everyone of the players I've known associated with Butler has the same attitude, I'm here for me and don't care about you.
