I'm a young 36 years old. I've been at my current school for 10 of my 11 years of teaching. I will be entering my 18th year of coaching football this upcoming fall. I'm worried. I'm the youngest coach in our entire program (frosh thru varsity). With the economy the way it's going, new teachers being hired will be few and far between. That being said, whoever gets hired will have less chance of being a football coach as well as a teacher (though I'd like to think that a person who does multiple things would have the advantage). What do you think will happen to our program? Lemme give you another example. We are about to have two coaches who have coached over 35 years stop coaching. One of the coaches has coached in over 250 games as a HC and won about 230 of them. What I am getting to is that there is nobody behind me. Where do you think the program will end up if we can't bring people in. It's scary for the program and myself. My kids will be in HS in about 6 to 8 years. I hope there are coaches to coach their teams.

You'll have kids in high school in 6 to 8 years? Kind of leaving a pretty large margin of error for them aren't you? Like a lot of things, the economy will go in cycles. When the HC steps down maybe you can step in. Most schools do want coaches if there is a need and I'm sure everything will work out.

Ahh SBV....the "you can step in". I talked with our HC. He told me that I could be an HC at most schools, if I wanted to be. And that is where it stands...if I wanted to be. I will go on record and say....I WILL NOT BE THE HC at our school. It would take an act of God to take over this position. And, I think the HC will outlast me. He is in his early 50s. I have already stated that if my kids play football...that I will be done coaching when they are out of football. That could be 12 years from now. Never hurts to plan the future out.
I just feel like that even if the economy is good...getting on campus teachers is going to be rough. We live in a community that doesn't have an overwhelming amount of jobs. Our closest away game is 1 1/2 hour away. It's not like a big city where there are more coaches available. Our off campus guys have been good, but there haven't been a lot of them. And again...they are older dudes.

Recruit your former players, they know your system and expectations and they have a stronger feeling of pride and ownership in your program than anybody you can find from the outside.

Yes 44, but there is a problem with that. Most of the former players leave town to go to college. Some have stayed around, but are working. A few have helped at the lower levels, but the committment has been just a few years at the most.
I guess I'm in it for the long haul, but that is hard for a lot of people that aren't teachers. With the economy the way it is....getting teachers that coach in CA........going to be tough.

What about old teachers retiring, leaving spots to fill? Do you think the administration would just not replace them? The teacher who can also coach would seem to have an inside track there, and a young one would be a lot cheaper than the older ones who've left so the administration saves money either way.
Good luck to you and your program, coach.

I failed to mention...that of our 20 coaches....only 3 are on campus. Dang.. 20 coaches.. that's more than the washington Redskins. What in the world do they coach. Do the coaches have coaches? We have 5 varsity coaches, 2 JV and 2 Frosh We are lucking in the fact that our county will open two new high school in the next three years and another on on the books

Jgord - I guess that is keeping the standard around here...having a lot of coaches. Hopeful....nobody is retiring and it's a good bet nobody get hired. That is the problem. We're in a declining enrollment. There might not be a need to hire young teachers.
Gord - we have 9 coaches on the varsity staff. 4 on offense and 5 on D. This year it will be 8 varsity coaches. JV has 5 and Frosh have 4. I guess...doing that math we'll have 17 in the program next year.

Wow...17 coaches, still a great deal more than 90% of the staffs down here in Louisiana.
Only 3 teachers....kind of alludes to something I posted around a year or so ago regarding the chances of football becoming a "club" type sport.
