In your opinion what is a realistic turnover margin for a good high school team. Since in the uppermidwest most states play 9 regular season games I will use that as an arbitrary number of games.
Of course we would like to go through a 9-game schedule without any turnovers but fumbles and interceptions happen. These are high school kids afterall. They will not be perfect all season.

I think a +9 is pretty realistic for a decent team. If you are +1 in each game you are covered. I like to be +2 in each game, sometimes we are sometimes we are not.

I agree with sbv, +1 a game is a good margin. It's what we shoot for.

My goal would be +1.

That is +1 per game

We have a goal of no more than one turnover a game. We can accept one, but others we consider carelessness.
We were not good RE: turnovers this past year (gave up two defensive TDs on fumble returns...plus a lot of others).
In 1997 we had 3 all season (semi-finalist...13 games. We were very weak offensively, but we almost never hurt ourselves.)

So how meaningful is this as a season stat? After all, if you are in the +/-1 per game range you're not hurting yourself; probably neutral. But +/-1 per game would extrapolate out to +/-1 per season. So, if you're +9 for the season you're doing quite well. But let's say you're +5. That might still sound pretty good but, if you had one game where you were +3, that means that you went +2 for the remaining 8 games. Still good but not anything that's likely to have had a big impact.
I guess what I'm asking is, at what point does this become a meaningful statistic for a season? I think a more important statistic, both within an individual game and for a season, might be points off turnovers. If you go -3 turnovers in a game but still come out +7 in points off turnovers, did you win or lose the turnover battle? Also, when looking at this statistic, do you include turnovers on downs?

We were -6in the championship game, but ended up +12 for the season. As a Defensive guy I like we end up there.
