Do any of you head coaches have specific things your assistants must do, or expect them to do. Do you have them sign an assistant coaching contract.
My AD is looking into having me put together something for my staff.
Any examples?? Thanks

I cant say as a HC.. but as an assistant. We dont sign any contract or anything like that. But in our pre season meetings the Head Coach lays out what he expects from as as a group, and us individually. Whether it be the equipment room, or scouting, or locking the locker room, passing things out, film/highlights anything that he needs done he will lay it out for each of us. Then on Sunday when we meet he will tell us what he expects from us in that particular week. Usually its the same stuff every week, or one or two new things. But everything is either stated or written down so there is no confusion on who does what. But of course there are some members of the staff who do more than expected.. but thats going to happen.

you would be suprised how many college assistants at d2 and d3 who do not even have contracts.
I have never coached at a high school or college with out a contract. It always detailed what was expected of it. how much we would be paid and such.

Coaching without a contract today is a risky chance you are taking. How are you going to be evaluated? What are your exact duties? All sorts of questions that you will want to have in print. I know many of us (myself included) have coached or are coaching without contracts. Unfortunately, a hand shake and a man's word aren't worth much these days.
Like mentioned, many, many college coaches have no contracts when they coach.
Get one if you can!

Our contract is very generic, including our salary and the length of season. It's strictly year to year and we usually get it during 2-a-days. Our duties are decided strictly by the boss.

We have just a standard extra duty contract. I think it says "assistant Varsity football." Has the stipend amount and what not.

when I was a head coach I negotiated a contract each years. I had my lawyer make a proposal to the ad/board. it would show what I was willing to do in exchange for the money they would give me. I even had if I get to state I and the assistants get x amount for getting there and if we win state we get x amount more.
I negotiated time off for clinics, miles for driving to and from clinics or state conventions. I also had if I were to be fired the burden of proof would be on the school district and school board in an open meeting before the public to present their case in front of an arbitrator.
