I have been in two different schools in the same district. The first school used showers as social time. I swear I had to threaten them with their life to get them out of the shower, both during the school day and after practice. They had all sorts of shower pow wows. At first they would be half an hour late to their next class. They loved to shower. Then at the next school, you couldn't make fun of their stink or threaten them enough to get them to shower. The only kids that are willing to get in the shower are the wrestlers. It is funny to see the basketball players in their with their boxers on. I now believe it is the culture of the town or school they are at. These schools are only 25 miles apart, but very different in their showering methods.

I grAduTED IN 1980 and we always showered after gym and practice- always. Never remember a single case of staff or ring worm- not ever, but my kids rarely shower after games or practice and almost never after lifting and we always have issues with ringworm and staff as well as other skin issues but I ain't going to "make" a kid clean himself nor should I have to. They all even have laundry bags they can turn in daily and we'll clean their clothes- they rarely take advantage of that. Clean is not a big deal with many of them.

Well, if you ain’t got balls, you ain’t got a need for a jock. ;D But seriously… highball007: I suspect it’s largely a generational issue, and the responses in this thread so far seem to bear that out. Looking at the comments made and the dates of birth in the profiles, it looks like the early ‘90’s is the break point. Guys who played in the ‘80’s or earlier don’t like or understand the current no jock, no shower ethos; guys who played in the last 10-15 years are fine with the no jock, no shower ethos. Personally, I’m in the first group. When I played h.s. ball in the late ‘70’s and small college ball in the early ‘80’s, everyone wore jocks and always showered. In college, we showered after every practice and off-season workout, then exchanged our school-issue clothes, including a jock, and towel to the “cage” in the locker room for clean gear for the next day. I played center for nearly all my career. The first week I played in junior high, I wore a cup, but the QB complained that it bruised his hand, so I never wore a cup again. Now, based on my own playing experience, I tell our centers that they aren’t doing their job if they don’t snap the ball hard enough to crack themselves in the balls at least once or twice a game. In my opinion, the current aversion to showering in the locker room is an ironic result of our hyper-sexualized society. Today’s teens can access all kinds of porn online, so it’s very likely that they’ve seen, perhaps somewhat regularly, over-endowed male genitalia, which in turn magnifies the normal adolescent worries about measuring up and fitting in. And our culture’s hypersensitivity regarding homosexuality (from the idolization of gay culture by the political left to gay-baiting by the political right) causes teen males to fear being perceived as gay if they appear too comfortable being naked in the shower or appear to be too attentive to the bodies of others. ‘Testicular trauma’ story: In the mid-’90’s, we were playing a pass-happy league opponent in a game with significant playoff implications. Our right corner was a talented athlete who hadn’t played much football. On one play along their sideline, they completed a pass over his head to a receiver who’d gotten behind him. Rather than give up, he turned, chased the receiver down from behind, and made the tackle. But in the process, one of the receiver’s heels kicked up and caught the kid square in the crotch. Despite the pain, he got himself up off of the 20 yd-line on the far side and across the field to our bench. When he got to the hospital, they found that one of his testicles had been ruptured beyond repair, so they removed it and replaced it with a prosthetic testicle to balance things out. We frequently tell our players that story as an example of toughness. Finally, a question: if ‘jocks’ stop wearing jocks, what does it mean to be a ‘jock?’ …just askin’…

Yeah i was never a jock wearer either. Our kids wear the tight girdles now. No jocks for them either. In my playing days..I did not shower after practice..but I went to high school in the ghetto and wanted to get the hell out of there. I did shower at away games though...I was not going to be the stinky guy on the bus.
At the school I coach at, the shower issue. I'd say 40-50% shower after practice and at home games. On away games...we make them shower before getting on the bus. Our kids are definitely comfortable showering in front of each other. Luckily thats not an issue.

I know I am showing my age. Like someone said, it is a generational issue. I was trying to give the perspective of a kid in Southern California. That is what everyone on my team did. It's not just me not taking showers and not wearing cups. I hope I just gave some insight into "kids these days".

I am going to venture a guess that no kid in any age enjoyed showering with other kids. thats just not normal.

I have coached for over 30 years and I played college ball also. We were required to wear them. We did without a problem. Did they help? To a certain degree. Today - there are several things out there they can wear - compression shorts, athletic briefs, etc. Not showering? Ever since that has been allowed in the district that I am in (27 years worth) the Staff infections have gone up every year. There a several schools in our district. All the schools have the same problem. Most but not all kids go home and shower. We do have some that will not leave until they have showered. They have not come down with Staff. You make your own conclusion.

LOL, come on most of us bathed with our siblings as kids and I showered, sometimes 2-3 times a day with my platoon mates when in the Marine Corp and no one ever found it abnormal or strange- it's by and larrge a maturity issue and nothing more.

I would say 75% of our kids wear boxers under their girdles. I could never do it, but whatever feels comfortable, I guess.
Not only do our kids not want to shower, but when we MAKE them shower after away games, they wear their boxers in the shower. When we do a final check of the locker room before we leave its common to find 12-15 pairs of boxer shorts IN THE TRASH. They apparently are now disposable junk hiders.
Funny story after our last away game. The shower the refs use was out of order, so apparently they were told to shower in our locker room. Like I said, at away games, we make the scumbags shower before the ride home. So if you can picture 4 middle aged, borderline obese butt naked men walking into a shower full of kids wearing boxers. I've never seen anything like it - one kid slipped and fell down because he was trying to get out of the shower so fast. The entire shower was cleared out in about 15 seconds and the kids still talk about it. Apparently they were scarred by the site of naked men.

When I played Football I never wore a cup. I always had compression shorts on though. Playing baseball, when I played the Infield I wore a cup, but by the time I moved to CF I stopped wearing it. It just slowed me down to much. As for the shower thing, I never showered after practice, because I was going home. After Home games I always showered and had nice clothes that I brought with me because I was usually going to a party after the game and didn't want to go home first. At away games I showered a majority of the time. For some reason it always seemed like they put us in the girls locker room and I thought it was cool to shower in the girls locker room. Just the way the teenage boys mind works I guess.

We were making kids shower after a staph outbreak...Health department told us to quit, and let them get out as soon as possible and go home to use their own soap, water, towel, etc.

I give 'em a talk and tell 'em "you gotta protect your boys and I ain't talkin' about your posse, ask them if they want to be a parent someday, tell 'em if they are wearing boxers there is always a chance they might not get to be a parent one day but might have a career singing soprano in a choir somewhere. That gets the grins and laughs, then I suggest they get some whitey-tighties or whatever color they prefer and wear those, and that's the last i say about that....

We had a kid a couple of years ago that got a scrape on his knee at a game and didn't shower after the game. To make a long story short, he got a staff infection and has never played football again because he got so sick, missed so much school and never caught up. He ended up dropping out. Broke my heart, he would have been a good football player and the first in his family to graduate. So I say make them shower after games at the very least.

Off the subject a bit, but when I was in junior high (1978) showering after PE class was part of your grade...you walked into the shower area dry, and were expected to come out wet. The teacher stood there with his grade book, and graded accordingly....(kids were all naked, too.) I could not even imagine doing that now!! Especially wiith middle school aged kids!! When I tell my current HS students that story, they really think I am making it up!!!

On a funny note: In high school we were whipping the towls around and one of our coaches walked in. He saw what we were doing and said "gentlemen, it's all fun and games until somebody loses a testicle." Then told us how he saw a buddy in high school whip a kid in the shower and split the kid's you know what. DUDE, one of my coaches did the exact same thing. it was almost word for word, the only difference was the kid was one of his players he coached at a different school. it stopped us whipping towels though

None of our kids wear a jock. We tell them why they should-testicular tortion (think a jock is uncomfortable Coach Green? Try twisting the ole nut-tubes.)- but they still won't. Had a coach at the college where I went my Fr. year that coached B-ball, and the Tennis team. (a little NAIA school). Anyway, some people called him "The Unicorn"...seems he was a pitcher in college and took a "comebacker" in the ol' family jewels that landed a direct hit on one and crushed it. He lost that one! I bet he wished way back then that he'd worn a cup. For football, I don't see a cup. Jock? Never wore one, and with today's tight fitting athletic underwear, can't see the need for one either.

I never wore a jock until I got to college. Once I did I thought it was a great invention. Showering is one of those things that's probably going to become politically incorrect. Eventually everyone needs to get over seeing other peoples wee-wees. Used to be sort of a right of passage didn't it??? My dad grew up in the 1930 and all the boys in the neighborhood would go swimming in their birthday suits. Don't think that would go on these days. We had a player twist up his testicles in his boxers this year during pregame warm ups and didn't tell anyone. Trainers just held him out. Required surgery the next day.
