When did kids stop wearing jocks? When did they stop showering after practice or games?
Does this happen everywhere or is it just at my school.
We have kids that wear there boxers under their girdle and they are coming out the top! Or we have players that sag their football pants! We had about 100 players 9-12 and there were 4 kids that showered after practice and games. For some reason it just absolutely disgusts me. I know it shouldn't because it is not my body, but it does for whatever reason.
I am applying for a Head Job and just curious to see if any of you make your players shower after games especially road games before getting on the bus to go home?
How do you approach this topic with the parents?

I have experience as a player and I will tell you DON'T make your players shower. That is weird. Most players just prefer to go home and shower. I mean, why don't you shower in the locker room showers? There's also the fact of the awkwardness of seeing other guys naked. It's a little much for a high school, looks oriented, setting.
As far as jocks and cups, I really don't even know what a jock strap does. I never wore one because there is no need for either. With the compression underwear and girdles today, it would take a serious shot from an elbow or knee to affect anything. Most of the time, even helmets don't affect you because the compression doesn't give much and protects you. Also, players don't like how cups feel for movement and prefer not to wear them because of that reason.
Just be thankful that your players wear leg pads and don't worry about any more than that. Also be thankful that your locker room doesn't smell like a commercial set for Axe. I know a ton of people that would play football or go to PE and then spray axe all over and go back to class or out to eat. Now that's sick.

As a player we were required to shower after practice games in the field house. You change in the same room. I know some freshman feel a little wierd but 10-12 should not have an issue. I have no issue using the shower at the field house. Not I am not going to shower with my players for obvious reasons.
Jock thing never wore one. We all had the compression girdles so there was not need. Not to nitpick but the "be thankful that your players wear leg pads..." This is not an option period. It is against the rules as far as know from Fed rules to college. Pros is a differen tanimal.

None of our kids wear a jock. We tell them why they should-testicular tortion (think a jock is uncomfortable Coach Green? Try twisting the ole nut-tubes.)- but they still won't.
No showers, either. The only time we have a long road trip is in the last two rounds of the playoffs so it's not really an issue. For the record they are required to shower if we have a long road trip, one where we change clothes there instead of back at our school.
Is it worth making them do either? We don't think so. Unless there's a two hour bus ride ahead. Then they need to shower no matter how "weird" they feel.

I don't understand why they feel uncomforatble being naked. Most kids have gotten more girls in hs than I have had in my entire life. If they ever had a chance at a 2 on 1 you know they would drop drawer before the sentence got out of her mouth

I wore boxers when I played HS ball. Albeit, it wasn't that long ago (within 6 years). Now, should I have worn compression shorts, yes, but I can say I never once got hurt as an offensive linemen there. I did try a cup, and it was simply awful.
As for showers, they left it up to our players. A lot of times, the wrestlers would do it. Besides that, everyone would go home. That's what I did, unless it was ridiculously muddy or I had a gash.

We dont require kids to shower. I am not sure those showers are clean to begin with. We dont require jocks but we put it in writing that they should wear a protective cup. Its an expectation.
Now, on away games we typically have 2-3 kids that do shower after a game before riding the bus, most often we just want to get on the bus and go home.

Not only did I never wear a cup for football but I never played with anybody who did.

there was actually a few good stories done on this a few years ago; sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/story?page=fleming/040922www.slate.com/id/2123007/for what its worth, count me as one of the only folks that wore both. Growing up, I had heard of the injuries with baseball and football to scare the crap out of me. As uncomfortable as it may have been, nut-shots and hernias (?) were something that made me neurotic as hell.

Man, I guess we are the only ones that make them shower. After every practice and game. Road trips they will shower when they get back to our school. Not my rule, but I do agree with it.
"How do you approach this topic with the parents? "
Just treat it like any other rule, go over it in a newsletter or at a parent meeting? Many parents love the rule because they got tired of smelling their kid when they got home or when they picked them up.

We require all of our kids to shower after practice and after games. We've recently had a major outbreak of staph infection in our area. Seemed at one time, every school in the area had a few kids catch staph. Now showers are required. To deal with the kids that are uncomfortable with their bodies, we have curtains that separate the showers. After the outbreak, we are also required to fully disinfect the locker room once a week and the kids must clean all of their equipment on a daily basis. It adds a little bit of time to the end of practice...but we feel it is worth it. As far as a jock...we do request that our kids wear some type of compression short or jock. We have a local doctor come in and talk to the kids about the risks of not taking care of the "junk". Most of them quickly get the picture. Just the phrase "testicular torsion" makes me queasy!

I never wore a jock, but always had spandex on under my girdle.
I would say about 25% of our kids shower after practice and 50% after games. We get after our kids especially on away games for not showering and getting on the bus.

Our kids don't do either. Gross.
I never wore a cup until I played lacrosse- live and learn!
Phantom mention testicular torsion- I got it in college and it by far is the worst pain I ever felt. Nut twisted then twisted back to normal, but bruised my spermatic cord? something liek that...Had to get ultrasounds on my sack. Imagine getting drop-kicked in the nuts and that pain not going away for 3 months. I was miserable.

Our kids don't shower in the locker room after practice or games and many do not wear a cup.
In HS we had a coach walk around with a whiffle ball bat, or as he called it his"pecker checker" to be sure everyone was "properly outfitted." One day I forgot my cup and wouldn't you know... I take a knee square in the twig and berries. Worst pain in my life. Never forgot it again!!

Wore a jock, but no cup.
When I was im High School it was mandatory to shower after gym or sports...the reason was for health reasons. At the risk of sounding weird...and I'm sure I'll take some heat for this...I have alot of good memories of the showers...alot of purely straight bonding...trading war stories, grossly inflating the number of tackles you made in the game, making fun of (good natured) coaches, or the best was the the few players on the team - and I think every team has one of these guys - who can do spot on impersonations of one of the coaches.

i graduated in 06, so i was playing HS ball from the 02-05 football seasons. I was the only one who wore a cup on my freshman team and after that i stopped it was just too uncomfortable and i felt slow. No one takes showers at the school... we have showers there none of them want to shower at the school though

We have football PE in the morning....99% of the players shower.....NAKED. It's just what they do. Get ready...then go off to their class.
A lot shower after practice, but not all. Some just grab their stuff and go home. Most shower after both HOME and AWAY games. If the opponents lockeroom doesn't have showers our players get pissed.
Players don't wear jocks. More of the spandex girdle thing.

man thats just crazy, in HS and College every player showered after every game and practice. Why wouldnt you? We did the same in PE, no one wanted to go around stinking up the place. Im not funkifying my car with sweat when I could wash it off with a free shower. Heck the health clubs here everythng is out in the open etc. I dont get it.
Cups, jocks, never wore them, but before they even had compresion undies I was wearing 2 pairs of too small underwear as I was a running back who once carried 31 times in a game etc.

We've never had a problem with the showering. Sometimes they are in there too long.
RE: Jocks- some still wear them, others wear the tight girdles (that they buy).
With MRSA problems and injuries to the balls (we've had a few), I address it before the first practice and everyone takes care of it.
Our biggest issue was washing practice clothes ("can't wash them if undefeated, etc.). MRSA issues put a halt to that, and we don't really have a problem, unless someone forgets.
Another issue was sharing towels. Our guys are better about this (and we do have a few clean ones they can borrow). Still, I know we have guys who sometimes use another guy's towel. When we catch this, that player has to wash and dry a load of laundry (towels, scrimmage vests, etc.).

I showered after every practice and game in h.s. and college. My players never shower after practice unless we have a practice in the mud. Only a couple will shower after home games. I make the all of them shower after away games. I don't want to smell them on the bus.

I played HS ball in 99-02, college ball 03-04. In HS I only showered after away games, but not for the same reasons that I'm reading here. Fact is, our showers weren't heated because it cost too much to run the water heater. There's no hot water out of any student-oriented faucets or showers anywhere on campus. Second issue was that there were no towels provided, which was a major factor.
Coaching at a public school where the hot water was there and towels were provided, most of our kids showered after practice and after games.
In regards to the 'Hardy Boys' issue, I always wore compression shorts w/ boxer briefs. Not the same as whitey-tighties, but better than boxers. Our HC wouldn't let us wear boxers to practice, if he saw 'em, he'd send us back to the locker room until we came back sans-boxers. Never wore a jock or a cup because I never, ever felt like I was playing as comfortably or running as fast as I would be without. 11 seasons of football, never had a single nut shot.

I always told my players that they better be wearing cups. I didn't do a "cup check" or anything, but I thought they were required equipment. I thought it was a rule that they had to wear them.
As for showers, we were about 50/50. I swear, some of the guys would take a half hour shower, and were slower than my wife at getting themselves ready after practice. Used to drive me nuts waiting to lock up after they were all gone.
A funny experience I had was coaching a German team. We finished with a practice and those guys were naked and in the shower faster than I could just get back to the locker room. Those guys had no problems with being naked in front of each other. I think even guys who didn't practice still took a shower. As an American, it was definately a little weird for me. They used to just whip it out and go to the bathroom during practice. Not on the field, but over on the sideline. When I had to go, I walked back to the locker room, which of course they made fun of me telling me I was bashful. Funny how kids have different perspectives and levels of comfort.

I wore boxers to school but changed into tidy-whites for football. Always wore a cup because I played center as a Frosh/Soph and never knew if I'd have to take reps there for some reason. Plus just like I tell my players now.
Now I tell the kids if they are going to wear one piece of equipment would you rather take a shot to the head or to the boys? Don't have a problem with them wearing cups.
As to showering we were not allowed to shower after practice. The only time we showered was two a days when we were before school and after. Then we were told to wear our bathing suits. Kids don't shower now. In fact not sure the showers work or that the lights in the showers work....

45 years of coaching plus my playing days and I can't count 5 kids who didn't shower after every practice. We don't make them, it is just a given. As far as jocks are concerned, at this school (the last 2 yrs) is the first I've seen where kids do not wear jocks. Never had anyone wear a cup but all wore jocks that were provided just as other pieces of equipment are. Hawke

Our kids shower. Naked. One kid has soap on a rope and a back brush. They crank up the stereo after practice. Some seem to like it too much . We have a group that always closes up the lockerrroom with the coaches and we have had to tell them to hurry up. I will say they seem to have a good comraderie which is more than I can say about some places I have been. I always wore a jock and cup. Even in practice. I had a buddy who didn't wear a cup and he lost a nut. It was not cool. I tell my kids that story. As for the boxers I have noticed it too. I tell the kids not to let thier junk swing. Personally I wonder how one can run with thier stuff not secured. On a funny note: In high school we were whipping the towls around and one of our coaches walked in. He saw what we were doing and said "gentlemen, it's all fun and games until somebody loses a testicle." Then told us how he saw a buddy in high school whip a kid in the shower and split the kid's you know what.

never been anywhere that taking a shower was an "issue." ... just something we do. our athletic period is in the middle of the day so kids shower prior to returning to class. just about all will shower again after practice that afternoon/evening.
i can remember when i played. first time i left practice without showering - went straight home to shower - my dad jumped all in my business. "you better shower up there and use THEIR water!! Boy, i ain't paying for water when you can get it somewhere else!!" ... haha...
