Any titles you've come across that your student athlete would be into reading in the off season? Not necessarily for every kid but for the couple that you have a fairly good idea will be your captains next year?
Just trying to get them thinking about leadership without having them think about football specifically during their hockey or basketball season.

John Maxwells Leadership 101 is great and it's not overwhelming by any means. Jeff Jansen has a great book on leadership written specifically for student athletes as well. I think it's The team captains guide to leadership or something along those lines.

I second ajreaper's comments about Maxwell's Leadership 101. It is small, readable, and strong stuff. It is the fourth in a series he calls R.E.A.L. Leadership, with the first three titled Relationships 101, Equipping 101, and Attitude 101. They are all small, short, and very good. The whole series could be used with student-athletes.
Maxwell also has another book titled "The Right to Lead: A Study in Character and Courage." While the R.E.A.L. series is what I would call more instructional in nature, this book is more inspirational. It is full of great quotes about leadership and short stories/vignettes about great leaders like George Washington, General Norman Schwarzkopf, Nelson Mandela, Eric Liddell ("Chariots of Fire"), Harriet Tubman, and Eddie Rickenbacker, as well as material from other books Maxwell has written. It is organized into chapters titled Action, Vision, Sacrifice, Risk, Determination, Service, and Integrity. Powerful stuff!
