Do any of you play in a state that does not place you in sub-categories?
Right now we have classes and those classes are divided into districts.. we are District 1 of class 4A.
There is a motion on the agenda to do away with districts in our state.
We will take the top 32 for playoffs based on a power rating system.
Anyone else work this way?
I just dont see it working.. and feel like it will fail when put to a vote.

In Illinois we have 8 classes and take the top 256 teams regardless of size or area with the tie breaker near the bottom (5-4 teams) being the amount of wins of the teams you played. After the 256 are found, they are then placed in 32 team brackets by enrollement (Private schools are multiplied by 1.65). The only exception is all conference champs (minimum 6 team conference) make it, so occasionally you get a 4-5 team. They used to strictley seed by record 1 vs 32 etc.. but now each class is broken in half or into quads due to travel reasons . Overall its a pretty good system. Wish there were six classes like it was when I was in HS and straight 1-32 seeding, but it could be worse.

We have Divisions/Conferences, but really shouldn't be classified as so. 4 Conferences with 28 teams per conference...divided into 2 separate sections (56 schools apiece). Problem is we only play an 8 game regular season, from which the top 8 teams move on into the playoffs based on power rating. SO you can get into the playoffs or win your division without playing 5 other teams. The power rating is figured by adding the winning %'s of the teams you beat + your own win % (minus) the losing % of teams you lost to. 1 plays 8, 2 plays 6, etc., and the system re-seeds each round based on remaining highest playing remaining lowest, etc. King of absurd in my book.
AIRRAIDER - sounds like your state wants to become the next BCS!!!

The same proposal is in front of our AD's, in Virginia. We currently have 3 classes broken into 4 regions. Each region will have 2-4 districts. When it comes to playoff time Each class is divided into 2 categories based on size. We have 6 state champions. Two for A, two for AA, and two for AAA. The vhsl wants to do away with districts and allow schools to make up their own schedules. The problem with that, powerhouses will have a hard time finding teams to play.

In SC, we have 1A-4A, with 7 or 8 regions in each, with 5,6, or 7 teams in each. In 1A and 4A the schools are broken up into two divisions for the playoffs. 16 teams make the playoffs in each 1A and 4A division broken up into upper and lower state brackets based on a points system. In 2A and 3A, 32 teams make the playoffs in each classification, with 16 in upper state and 16 in lower state. The top 4 teams in each region makes the playoffs, I hate that rule because sometimes teams with one win on the year get in because they beat a region team, leaving out teams that are usually better from other regions. 4A plays a 11 game regular season and 4 rounds of the playoffs. 1A plays 10 regular season games and 4 rounds of the playoffs. 2A and 3A play 10 regular season games and 5 rounds of the playoffs.
