A story they may not even be a story anymore from all that I know, but there was talk that Al Davis is extremely interested in Kevin Gilbride (OC of the New York Giants). Well, for those of you who did not know or those that did not own a TV in the early 90's, Gilbride is a Run and Shoot ambassador and is squirming to run it from what I have found. I have heard that actually runs some concepts with the Giants now. {I have seen switch, levels, and choice in some games this season.} Do you think that since he would be the head honcho that he would go to the Run and Shoot? Or would Al Davis welcome him and then say, "By the way, there will be no shootin on the West Coast."
Personally, I would love the idea and I am very anxious to see how or if this pans out. What do you guys think?

He didn't run it with the Chargers from '97-'98, so I see no reason why he would suddenly get to bust out a pure Run and Shoot now working for one of the NFL's most meddling owners. Gilbride may get the job, but I look for a more generic NFL offense like he's ran everywhere since Houston. He still tries to incorporate some of the old run and shoot concepts whenever he can, but then again, so do most NFL teams these days. I'd certainly love to see him install the "pure" version, though.

He's running an advanced version of Ron Erhardt's passing game, which is where the Patriots, Dolphins, Panthers, and Cardinals current systems are rooted. Thats what he ran in Jax, SD, Buffalo, and now in NY. He still runs choice (although I think Coughlin calls it Read), Switch, etc. I got "total acess" at training camp in BUffalo the first year there, and it was awfully exciting to see them installing with some really good weapons at the time. It would be more exciting to me, however, to see him get a chance with a team that has a chance of success.

He obviously had ties with these same teams (Jets, Pats, Parcells, Weis, etc) and of course Coughlin too. I knew of Erhardt's influence but I had thought that Henning played a bigger role. And yea, I don't know how I feel about Gilbride going to the Raiders. I mean, even if he tried the shoot there I'm sure he'd fail, because just about everything would fail there, but then the storyline would be that it was the offense. And there is something to be said that the position they seem to have the most talent at is running back. Maybe they can run the wildcat all the time.

It doesn't matter what offense is installed, Al Davis still calls the shots. Warren Sapp said every time the sideline phone rings it's Al calling to tell the coach to go deep. Al knows football, just the 60's and 70's version. I have been a Raiders fan since the second grade, but I will not claim them untill Al lets his coaches coach.

Henning ran the old Redskins system until he was OC at Buffalo in 97. After that, he was re-acquainted with Parcells as QB coach of the Jets, and since has used the same system/ terminology in Carolina and Miami that the Patriots and Notre Dame use.

I have been a Raiders fan since birth and honestly, since marcus allen has been gone, the mystique has been gone. Seriously I do not get why the Raiders didnt get a coach that fit their whole imagine. Buddy Ryan would have been a great fit, ...so doesnt that make Gilbride absolutely wrong for that spot? I want to see Bush pounding folks and a defense that gets after it every down. Forget the chuck and duck and pound the rock, dink and dunk and play some nasty defense!

Bottom line: While Herr Davis is calling the shots, the Raiders cannot expect sustained success, or even consistency. Unfortunate, but true.
