How come Greg Gumbel doesn't react to the hit? I mean, I'd be out of my seat as the play by play guy.

Shouldn't be! I hate that rule. You will get flagged if you hit a receiver who is in a defenseless position( ie. not looking at the defensive back). So basically you have to let him catch the ball then run before you can hit him.
I say if you don't want to get hit hard then go flip burgers for $6.00 an hour. If you are making millions of dollars to play in the pro's then take a hit.

I think it's a penalty. The guy isn't even trying to catch the ball. The ball is no where near him, the Safety sees this. I like big hits, I like guys being tough, but I also don't want to see guys get rocked just because you can. I know it wasn't helmet to helmet, but I look at is the hit necessary and I don't think so. I'll disagree with the wussification of america comment. How about trying to extend these guys careers a little bit so we don't have a bunch of cripples walking around at age 50. Play hard, play fast, but know when to pull up on someone who can't make a play on the ball.

It's a penalty. Watch it again, Clark knows that the ball isn't going to get there. It is a penalty.

Penalty IMO because the ball was no where near Welker. If the ball touched Welker before contact was made, I would say nice hit. As it is, the ball wasn't going Welker's way, and Welker didn't even have his eyes looking downfield on the crossing pattern. Definitely defenseless.

to me it looks like from the behind view that welker was between the ball and the defender
the defender was looking for the big hit and didn't see if the ball was cuaght/whatever
i think it was just flagged because it looked bad

Beat me to it. I was just getting ready to post something similar to tog. I don't think Clark even knew the ball was tipped. He saw Cassel getting ready to throw and went for the big hit. I'm not surprised it was called given today's NFL, but I don't think it should have been.

He had no chance to catch the ball. I'm fine with the hit if the ball is anywhere near him, or he has a chance to catch the ball. Maybe clark doesnt' see the ball, but the reciever is pulling up, without the ball. I think he could pull up. I'm not saying I don't want to see hits in football, I love big hits, just make them when they count not on a guy who has given up on a ball he can't catch.

No freaking way. I commented on these exact morons just two weeks ago for the same idiocy. No way. He didn't spear he didn't hit him early, he just played the wide reciever.
If Welker made the catch, would he have taken a knee. Fair is fair.

From the moment the ball was thrown, the safety was timing up his hit ready to jar the ball loose the moment it got there causing an incompletion and making the WR less likely to want to go across the middle again (aka the perfect defensive play) To be quite honest, I think it's a shame the ball got tipped because if it hadn't, then the idiots calling the game would've been praising him for a well timed hit.........and no it's not a penalty, the rules are crystal clear on this one. If the ball is tipped, the defense can tee off as long as it's in the air and as long as they don't lead with their helmet.

honestly i think welker's size is what made it look so bad. He's a little guy and clark is a pretty good sized safety. I did not think it was a penalty.

It would be interesting to see what percentage of Offensive coaches say Yes it is a penalty and what percentage of defensive coaches say its not.
I say its not. Tipped ball = WR Fair game. I bet Welker thought twice next time he went across the middle. BTW I am a Defensive coach!

I'd like to see how many coaches would say it wasn't a penalty if it was their guy getting jacked up versus they were the ones doing the hitting.

I am an offensive coach, but also from Pittsburgh...let me think a second...NO WAY is it a penalty. I agree with DC Ohio and the others who have posted, the NFL is a joke the way they try to regulate the game. How many DVD's are out there from NFL Films promoting the big hits...you can't have your cake and eat it too! In the words of Coach Hawk: "It's FOOTBALL!...It's FOOTBALL!...go play intramurals if you don't like it." (or anyways his words to that effect)
Maybe I'm biased being from Western PA, but that's the way the game is played around here, can't comment on the rest of the country. Santonio Holmes took a big hit from the Cincinnati safety, but nobody got upset in Steeler Country because we understand that's the way to play the game. Jack Tatum rocked Lynn Swann and John Stallworth a few times as well, but the Steel Curtain returned the favor when they had the chance. It's football. Too bad the suits who run the NFL haven't figured it out yet. That's why I'd rather watch college or high school football.

Update in the Pittsburgh papers this morning, the NFL did not fine Ryan Clark and admitted he should not have been flagged for a penalty. Score one for real football! I am amazed though cause I was sure he was gonna be fined.
