Florida is playing the Citadel today and is leading 49-6 at halftime with 512 yard of offense. Urban Meyer said this week he would be disappointed if his team didn't put up 60 points this week. If you were the citadel, other than a payday, why would you even schedule this game? What would you tell your players going into the game knowing they have more All Americans on their team than the history of your program has ever had. What is your message to the team at halftime of a game like that? I know Appalachian State beat michigan so anything is possible but that was an appalachian state team that had won 2 straight national championships at the time the citadel is 4-7. Just want to get some views on this game and how you would prepare and what you'd tell your kids.

Well, it probably IS just for a payday...and maybe to help recruiting a bit ("HEY, you get to play on TV vs Florida"..."We play the best competition") etc.
As far as being out manned, you simply tell the kids that this will be a great test of their fundamentals. We are dealing with kids who chose the Citadel lifestyle for a reason. They aren't stupid. They aren't going to be "pep talked" into performance. Just play your best, and measure yourself against the best. Playing this late in the year, it is a great indicator of what you need to work on for next season.

The same reason Navy plays Notre Dame. Navy makes enough money off the Notre Dame game to fun their whole football program for a year. what people do not know is army, navy and air force have to play these games because they have to self fund just like any other D1 athletic program.

The same reason Navy plays Notre Dame. Why to help get Charlie Wise fired?

Good point Yash - Navy and ND play each year precisely for that reason. Im sure Navy gets some cash especially since the game @ Navy isnt ever actually @ Navy. Navy helped keep ND afloat during the war.

I don't know what I'd tell my players. "Let's hold them to 59!"
I'm 100% sure Florida ran the Citadels offense better during practice than the Citadel did during the game.

Schools like that make huge paydays. I know that matters not to the players. However, I think kids go to those schools knowing they'll play a few "payday games" along the way and accept it. And every once in a blue moon, you get an Appy State beating a Mich, and that is something those kids will cherish for years to come. I think you just get them ready, tell them to play as hard as they can, and remind them it's only one game, and they still have conference play left to compete for.
And it's not quite the difference in talent, but Troy has basically instituted a new motto: "Anybody, anywhere, any time". They play 3 or 4 payday games a year, AND they go expecting they have a chance to win every single one.

Citadel players will almost all be soldiers when they graduate so they will be seeing a lot more adversity than losing a FB game. Heck Texas Tech almost lost by more than The Citadel did. I don't think the players will be terribly disappointed once practice starts for next week (if they have any more games).
My alma mater (FCS Northeastern University) played 2 FBS schools this year (Syracuse and Ball State) for the payday. The players get to see how they match up against 1A talent and also get money to help the FB program.
1AA FB is not profitable so any money raised in these games can help the entire athletic dept.
