I could only imagine- but I bet you could pay-per view it. thescore1210.com/cc-common/gallery/display.html?album_id=147779Pic #14 Rome- sucks PTI- don't mind it too much Mayne Street- love it College Game Day- watching Corso make a horse's a$$ of himself on a weekly basis is priceless. The new Sportscenter format- I don't know- hasn't grown on me yet. As far as it being the worst thing in football, I don't think so. Anytime I can catch football nearly every day of the week is fine by me- that, and the fact that ESPN classic replays the great games from years past is alright by me.

I like ESPN for the most part. Can't stand Rome. The only problem I really have is that so many people think they can watch ESPN and really know football. I didn't realize how much false stuff I thought I knew, or how little real football I actually knew until I started studying football, and talking to the guys here, and finally with a little coaching.

just some clarification.......
Erin Andrews......her voice is like 10 menstrating cats being dragged across a chalkboard.
Give me Bonnie Bernstein, Tracy Wolfson, Lisa Salters, Jeanine Edwards......but Erin can go home, man.
I actually thought about this (ESPN effects) when reflecting about what football (sports) really IS. It is performing to better yourself for the affirmation of others. It is about giving (more of) yourself.
ESPN broadcasting games doesn't seem to be any different from FOX (regional) or ESPNU, ESPNCL or CST or NFL-N.
ESPN is to sports as MTV is to music. They, by their format, are changing the dynamic of what sports actually represent. ESPN filters how kids receive the sport / game and shapes it to a different perspective that many of us are accustomed to.
There is that, and then....the unceasing advertising dollars at work, with a TV timeout peppered throughout a game to break up any momentum you would have experienced. Why do I have to have my broadcast interrupted with interviews with Keifer Sutherland or Pauly Shore whenever a new ABC/Disney special /movie is being released? Seriously..

Personally I think television has hurt all the games that make up what we call sports. Too many rules are made not what is best for the game but what is best for television. That said I watch a lot of football games on ESPN & enjoy every one of them

I have three beefs with ESPN.
1. Their blatant bias towards the Dallas Cowboys, New England Patriots, LA Lakers, and NY Yankees. Its great if you are a bandwagoner who is a fan of one of these teams, but for everyone else who actually likes to hear complete coverage it is getting a little annoying.
2. Their total lack of respect towards the sport of MMA. Whether anyone likes it or not boxing is dying and ESPN's target demo is now flocking toward MMA. It has more action, and is a more complete combat sport. But to ESPN MMA doesnt exist...and what little bit of MMA that is cover is done so by boxing writers who know nothing about the sport.
3. Mike and Mike in the morning. How many times can Mike Greenberg say "Mike and Mike in the morning" in one show is just short of amazing. So bland, no actual opinions... not sports talk radio.

ESPN must be doing something right, if we can come up with lists this long of stuff we don't like about them, we are obviously watching enough to find stuff we don't like.
I like ESPN. The more sports I can get the better. Its a great way to get back at my girlfriend for making me sit through project runway. While they are there to bring us sports, in the end its a business and they are there to turn a profit. All of the advertising and what not, you get that with any broadcast now days. It was one of the reasons Keith Jackson quit calling TV games. He was sick of pimping ABC's newest smash hit of the fall every 5 minutes. I just take it all with a grain of salt and enjoy as much college football as they want to put on TV.

Good post. My only problems with ESPN are Jim Rome and contrary to another poster's views, the Holtz pep talks. I find them (the talks) incredibly dumb.

Yes, but when I have to sit in the stands for a state championship game and listen to people behind me say things like "Get a pick six". "Cover 2" (when it is really man free) and all the other stuff that you hear so many "experts" talking up on ESPN.

Kornheiser... Rome...Dan Patrick.... *shudders* Guys like these are why I don't like talking football with anybody besides current or former coaches. Because everyone thinks they're an expert, but in reality must have ESPN and NFL Network tell them what goes on in a game. I mean really, how many articles and specials on TV networks have you seen the past few years on Cover 2? I'm all for spreading knowledge of the game (I wanna be a coach!), but when you think you're an expert on defense because you can spit out the most basic of information on the Cover 2 which you learned watching ESPN, that's when I get {censored}. How about when my head coach wants to switch to zone schemes this season and forwards me Bob Davies zone articles from ESPN.com for research? awesome (can you hear the sarcasm?)

The extensive game coverage is great, but the content of what they say continues to decline. The goal of their broadcasts should be to educate while entertaining. Unfortunately, the quality of their content gets weaker and weaker every year. This is especially so with football. Even on their college football shows the analysts they bring in are fundamentally horrible. Consider Todd McShay, for example. What are his credentials? He made a comment the other day comparing Graham Harrell to Sam Bradford and the offenses they run that was fundamentally at its core incorrect. He speaks from this position of authority, yet it is evident that he, the talking head who is paid to know this stuff, does not understand the differences between what OU and TTech do on offense. The guy actually said that Tech runs no-back stuff and that OU is more of a pro style offense. This is what frames public opinion. Tech never runs out of empty; Franklin does at times, but not Leach. OU's current offense, which is an athleticized version of what Kevin Wilson ran at Northwestern a number of years ago, runs more empty than Tech. I believe Mcshay was a QB or DB at Richmond but I don't think he played much. I think there best analyst is Bill Curry I might be in the few but Ron "Jaws" Jaworski to me is one of the more interesting guys in analyzing football.

Where'd that term even come from? I've only just heard it this year. Personally, I think it sounds extremely stupid and gimmicky.

This could be my favorite topic. I hate ESPN because I feel that they can (and do) skew opinions in college football... where opinion matters the most because of the AP votes and recruiting. If ESPN wants to they can bury a University of Miami while promoting USC and washing any Reggie Bush scandal under the rug. Reggie Bush gets bought off and it's 5 minute news, Antwan Easterling is accused of stat rape and they start a series off with the story. It's just like fox news, but for sports... they can condemn Pacman Jones all they want, but he gets them ratings/dollars so they love him (see Obama).

For all those complaining about the "in depth accuracy" of the talking heads/analysts, just remember this:
THEY ARE NOT TALKING TO YOU!!
Exotic Dancers don't dance so as to impress ballerinas or broadway producers when they are on stage.

"Cover 2" (when it is really man free) and all the other stuff that you hear so many "experts" talking up on ESPN. But this didn't start with ESPN. In 1980, far pre-dating ESPN, I was (unfortunately) sitting in the stands at a playoff game when a fan started yelling, "Where's the middle linebacker? The middle linebacker should be there.". The team that he was talking about was running a 6-2 defense which, obviously, had no middle linebacker. "Football experts" existed long before ESPN and if the network closed tomorrow would still be there.

I'd just like to have them quit calling a fly/jet sweep a "reverse", now that would progress. AMEN!!! I don't know if anybody has said it, but what about when they call games featuring option teams like: Army, Navy, GTech... IT IS NOT A QB DIVE IDIOT; IT'S THE MIDLINE!!! For the love of GOD read a football book. Oh and Rachel Nichols... Nuff Said! She's the only reason I watch any Basketball.
