Defense has held your opponent to one big play (INT snagged away by the WR) and a TD at the end of the half...you are up 18-7 at mid field...4th and 4 with an O that has no short yardage game...9 minutes left in the 3rd quarter...probably less than 100 yards of O given up by your D in the first half...on the road vs a team that you lost to in double OT 2 weeks earlier...
Try to draw D offsides? Go for it? Punt?

I might try something to draw them offsides, but beyond that, punt and play Def. It's a 2 possession game, but with almost half the game left..."2 possessions" can go as quick as 2 turnover "Pick 6s".

I'm a DC, so I might be a little biased here, but I've also watched enough football to say "punt the damn ball and let the defense do its job!"

definetly try to draw them offsides, maybe sat set go and shift your back or something that is almost cheating but within the rulebook. if they dont jump then call timeout and punt

What is the mentality of the two teams (i.e., what is momentum like) at that stage of the game? Is your team demoralized by going for a 4th down and not getting it, or is this something they are used to playing through?
How good is the other team's FG kicker, and how good is your punter/punt coverage?
You said the offense has "no short yardage game". I wouldn't consider 4th and 4 to be a short yardage down anyway. If you can line up and get 4 yards when the defense knows what you are going to do, then you will win this game regardless. If we were going to run a play, it would be something that allowed the QB a run/pass option (sprint or boot).
Certainly, the punt is the safe and sane answer, but if this is a team that rarely sends the block and their kids have been lazy with watching the ball be kicked, this is an excellent time for a fake punt.

How good is my punter / punt team?

I would try and draw them off with a Freeze call and then burn a TO and punt it. I would be tempted to run a fake punt because they might not be expecting it early in the 3rd quarter with the lead. But that thought would be a fleeting one as my DC would cut my nuts off if it didn't work.
My team this year, my punter would have put it down around the 20-25 yardline. If your D can hold them you stand a good chance at getting the ball back around midfield again plus/minus depending on the punt and the return.

See this is exactly the reason I hate offensive coordinators. GET OVER YOURSELVES!! We are in the 3rd quarter, that team has had an entire first half and all they have managed to score was one TD...7 points in 27 minutes of football, we are in the 3rd quarter, they have 21 minutes left and they need to score 12 points, they haven't scored 12 points in 27 minutes, what makes you certain they can score 12 points in 21?? As much as it conflicts with you're EGO of being the REASON the game was invented, of being smarter than everyone else, the reason people even come to the game, swim your @$$ to the shore of Lake Me, get out and towel off and punt the {censored} football. Well said LOL

line up to punt.
if they give you the fake, take it.
if they don't, punt.

Depending on your timeout situation try to draw them offsides and then punt the football.

We are Spread and If the QB was the punter the situation would be very easy. Go nascar, do a double freeze count, if the 2nd freeze count dint work back your QB up and do a quick kick. No one should be deep. If they are we will probably pass it because they are gona have a blown gap in their coverage. If the QB isnt the putter I would still try to double freeze them then take a timeout and punt the football. Offense wins games, Defense wins championships.

If I was even thinking about it I'd ask my DC his thoughts- and would only go for it if he agreed no matter what I thought (and I'm the HC/OC). I am not going to take a chance and place my defense and DC is a bad situation unless he's on board. I am aggressive in short yardage situations beyond our 40 and he now often will be giving me a yay or nay as the ball is being spotted- he knows I already have a play and will send it in should I get the thumbs up from him.

Punt and play defense. But I would angle kick and tell the punter to put it out of bounds no matter what. I would not put it in the hands of that track star they got waiting on the ball. Even if it's out at the 15-25 it's not different from kicking it in the end zone and there is not return threat. Punt out of bounds and play defense.

just checking...we go for it...get stopped... two play later TD (BS pick play but that is another story)...then we end up fumbling, INT, next thing you know we are WAY behind...the other team finished with about 225 yards of total O but 34 points...
It happened all year and it cost us all year...it was not like we had a great O...we averaged 4 turnovers a game...just one of the many frustrations that I had this year...
I just wanted to make sure that my thinking was in line with most of the football 101...
As I was walking down the sideline after I found out the call was to go for it...I had 4 JV coaches pleading with me to punt it...but I just have A$$ in front of mine name...not HEAD so I do not make those desicsion...maybe one day...
