Watching the Steelers today and noticed that they run a lot of 5-receiver sets but they really don't spread the field...they will have 5 receivers but they are all in relatively tight to the formation (outside receivers well inside the numbers).
What is the rational for this? Why use spread formations if you really aren't going to spread the field?

compressing the formations can create problems for man to man coverage.
what were the routes???

It was great for the TE. Was free all day.

They didn't score a TD on offense today and still won?

Divide from 1 and two with some sort of shallow from three.

They did a lot from bunch trips. They had a couple route combinations. Tight formations are good when attacking man to man coverages. A lot of rubs create confusion.

When I think Steelers' offense, I think compressed formations and multiple TE sets.

What is the rational for this? Why use spread formations if you really aren't going to spread the field? Some of it may have had to do with play timing. Getting the routes to time out right with dropback and protections.
