Wondering how the JV/Frosh teams are set up, based on the thread discussing those teams.

Also, would be curious what you think the "norm" is in your area. In my area, near New Orleans..the bigger schools generally have a separate staff for Frosh teams, IF they exist. The JV's are usually just the varsity coaches, and a position coach "calls" the offense and defense...

We have to run a seperate freshman program; we get 60-70 kids out for freshman football each year.
Heck, we could almost have a seperate sophomore staff;we had 50+ of them out this year.

we have "unfortunatly" a separate frosh staff. They do not even come to the varsity games to watch. Our JV staff and the JV's practice w/ the varsity until about the week of the first JV game. after the season starts, we take about the top 30-32 and then the jv's practice by themselves. not all the JV coaches make the varsity game either? ? not sure what the rest of the league does.

We have a separate frosh staff, separate soph staff, and a varsity staff. We all follow the same scheme. JV is played on Sat following the varsity game.

Separate Freshman staff, position coaches for varsity call JV.
Most of the larger schools in the area do it this way. Smaller schools I've been at we did it all, 6th grade up.

Varsity coaches coach Freshmen and JV. We have 60+ on the freshmen team and 50+ on the JV.
Our kids learn an offensive and defensive position. Coaches coach one side of the ball. So when the Varsity offense is working out the Freshmen and JV are working with the Defensive coaches.
They go through a full practice on both sides of the ball. When we go to team we divide them up.
Coaches alternate on a weekly basis on calling offense and defense.
I like this because it ensures that the skills and techniques you want taught are being taught correctly. It means a little more work for us as coaches, but in the long run it pays off for the program.

We have a 'separate' staff for the Freshman team, but would include them as a part of the whole. They come to Sunday meetings and help set up the week. On Thursdays, all of the staff is at the Fr/JV games. We all work together. The Fr team does practice separately from the rest.

Separate frosh staff. JV is coached and called by varsity assistants. All are expected to be there on Thursday for 9th/JV games and everyone there for varsity.

When I was in HS, we had a Freshman staff (4-6 people usually), Sophomore Staff (4-5), and a JV/Varsity Staff. The Varsity staff coached the JV.
That school was huge though.
The current school I coach at has...
Freshman/3rd Stringers (Varsity) Squad and a Varsity Squad. The Freshman Coaches are in the box and on the headsets for the Varsity games.
If we had 20-30 more kids, we would have Freshman Squad, and a Junior Varsity Squad.

Freshmen have one paid coach and 4 volunteers. (~40 kids)
JV/Varsity have five paid coaches. (~40 kids)
One of the smallest schools in the state.
