I have a few kids at my school who are offered NAIA scholarships...the thought was they would be DIV I AA or DIV I kids..but havent been given any offers. A former DI player on staff feels they should walk on rather than take the NAIA scholarship...where I (I played DIV III) feel they will be very successful at the smaller level. Any advice or opinions I can offer the coach or the kids?

Some of them may be limited by their parents financial situation. Id be careful about talking a kid out of a free ride before I talked to his parents about it.

Tell me to explore all their options. Talk to position coaches at these D-1 schools. Also be willing to meet with parents and the player about the players options

1- talk with the kids folks 2- is it about playing football or is it about education? (honest question. chances are they would be getting essentially the same education no matter where they end up going to school). If it is just about football more than education and the parents can pay, the walkon route might be something to look in to/pursue (still need to talk to college coaches, see if the kid can be an "invited walkon."). If it's about education/money, the solution is simple, take the scholly

As stated above, be careful about recommending a player to "walk on" with a Div I program. Due to NCAA rules, it is much more complicated to walk on than in years past. Many programs do not allow anybody to walk on without being asked to walk on as a "Preffered Walk on" player. Be sure to check with the coach about how they deal with a player that wants to walk on.

Most important question...WHAT is important to them?

Very few NAIA "scholarships" are 100% free rides. Most are partials and many of those schools are fairly expensive
Depends on the kid and his situation,
Some situations, walking on at a public school would actually be less expensive than a "scholarship" at a NAIA school.

A walkon was drafted in the 1st round within the last 2 or 3 years I believe. Plenty of them get drafted in the later rounds. Its not common, but the best do get drafted.

Around here most of the NAIA schools are 2x + the cost of PUBLIC Universities. Most PRIVATE schools of course set you back quite a bit, not sure how that is important , Harvard, Yale, etc cost a bunch too, but PUBLICs are significantly less. Many NAIAs are quite expensive around here anyways. So here anyways a "scholarship" (partials) to an NAIA school will in the end cost you more to attend than paying full boat at a PUBLIC University.
