A couple weeks ago I noticed that Ohio State has a #2 on offense (Prior) and a #2 on defense. I didn't think this was legal but it must be. Anyone else noticed this and what's the rule?

You can have duplicate numbers as long as neither number is on the field at the same time. For example, awhile back OSU had both Santonio Holmes (WR) and Will Allen (FS) wearing number four.

Many universities will suit up well over 100 players on game day, especially home games. Thus, you have to double up on several numbers.
Missouri's punter and kicker had the same number a couple of weeks ago, if I am not mistaken.

I remember in 2004 a group of guys a row in front of me at an OU game said "I can't believe they have Adrian Peterson going both ways and returning kicks"
I could hardly contain my laughter, especially because the other 28 was a high profile guy as well

Correct, as long as they're not on the field at the same time it's fine (i.e. an offensive and a defensive player). However, specials teams can be an issue. In a USC game a few weeks ago, I saw one of their kickoff coverage players wearing a scrimmage vest/pinnie because he was one of two players wearing the same number.

cal's jahivd best shared the same #4 jersey with one of the starting DBs his freshman year, so on special teams he changed jerseys to a number 14 with no name on the back and that looked like it was 2 sizes too big (probably easier/quicker to change in/out of)...at that time he wasnt starting so he had a play or two to change.

yes this is definitely not legal.. Why do you say that? Do you know of a specific rule which prevents it? Virtually every D-1 team has duplicate numbers. For sake of example I picked Ohio State's roster, because I know they have two #2's. It turns out they also have two #1's, two #3's, two #5's, two #8's, etc. As long as they're not on the field at the same time, there appears to be nothing wrong with it. Alabama has four players with duplicate numbers. This article actually explains the rule: blog.al.com/rapsheet/2008/09/whats_the_deal_with_duplicate.html

Of course they do. That's just common sense. If you have more than 100 players that dress you have to double up numbers. If there are retired numbers than that's a few more. In HS we usually don't have that problem (if you do good for you). I can see it in D.1, though.

Right off the bat I can tell you that Auburn has many duplicates...see the roster link below. Starting QB and place kicker both wear #18. auburn.rivals.com/croster.asp
