We had a freshman kid that kept losing his stuff. He told me that it was being stolen. His Dad came in to talk to me about it and said that his stuff was getting stolen including the new pair of game socks that I had given him the night before. We went to his locker and found everything that he had lost either on top of his locker or behind the junk in his locker. As I pulled out the last item his Dad said, "Sorry about this Coach. He hasn't been right since he got his hair cut." I shook my head and walked off. I told an assistant the story and his response was "Who does his Dad think he is, Samson." We got a big kick out of that.

The "it was stolen" excuse is getting more and more common: "I didn't lose it, someone else stole it."
I was walking out to practice one day when I noticed a player without a mouth piece. "Where is your mouth piece?" I asked, "Somebody stole it" he said. "What do you think the thives will do with a used mouthpiece that is molded to fit in your mouth? I bet they wil sell it for big money on the streets." I said. "Maybe I lost it in the locker room...."

This one is actually not lame, it happened in our game last week and was funny as he!l !! Anyhow we are in there at halftime of a fairly close ballgame for us (13-7 vs. the #10 team in the state) and we are going over things and the HC tells everybody to take a knee. Well our junior OLB does not take a knee and when asked why he says that if he moves he will crap his pants!!!! He stood there breathing in through the nose and out through his mouth for a good minute, and when he saw or ah felt the oppourtunity he bolted for the toilet!! He wasn't kidding either!! Duece My Sophmore year in HS, on the road for our first round playoff game. Playing a top 5 team in the state and they had given up all of 49 points all year. We were a Wish/ Flex Bone team. QB gives on midline; fullback breaks a couple tackles at the line, breaks a few more in the secondary (If memory serves me correctly he broke five or six tackles total) and breaks it for a 50 yard TD. Once he reached the endzone he kept going staright to the locker room to "drop a load". Sorry, not a Lame Excuse, but a funny story.

Coach I missed practice because I just had to go shopping for my sister's baby shower. Turns out that a couple of years later he comes out of the closet, so then I finally understood
This next one is my all time favorite. Down by 3 45 seconds to go. We are slowly moving into field goal range. Its now 3rd down and I feel a tug on my sleeve. A little freshman is looking up at me and says: "Uh coach, since we aint gonna win can the young guys go in and get a shower before the seniors use up all the hot water"
I was speechless

Not trying to hijack the fun loving thread...just some recent events have been really eye opening.

I would think that if all these threads came from one team, but to say that about 1 kids comment on a football team...that's a little far fetched to me. The younger kids on our team seem to say them more er...WAY more than the older kids. I think that is just an age thing, and not a program buy in or beleif thing. Rember they're still youngin's and at their age their thinking with 2 heads remember?! Duece

"Coach, Sorry I missed practice yesterday. My aunt's neighbor got kicked in the head by a horse."
I mean, what do you say to that?

Duece Coach..I am not sure if I was clear..I was talking about THAT specific quote..and situations like it involving game situations. Not all of the quotes. I have come to a realization that often, the lower level kids don't really give a rats behind about the varsity program. It might just be the situation I have most recently been involved with. Those kids (who haven't lost a game in two years by the way) really don't care much about the varsity. Their team is what matters to them...and after thinking about it..who could blame them?

kid saw me in the hall during the schoolday and says"coach i really hope it doesnt rain today." and i said "why ?". and he says... well we will have to cancel football practice." so i tell him"son, we practice OUTSIDE in football (hes a freshman with no experience), rain or shine." and he looks me dead in the eye and says"i wont be going to practice if it rains, i dont want to get sick."
had a kid 2 years ago tell the coaching staff he missed 2 days of practice because he had been kidnapped.
same year had a kid miss a GAME because he went to broadway to see "the lion king" with the glee club
on a more somber note, just today a kid came to me and said his mom was picking him up early and he wouldnt be at practice because of a recent rash of gang shootings in our city... a kid from his neighborhood had been targeted and shot and his mother was taking no chances. reality hits you hard sometimes.

A guy I played with in high school missed practice one day. When we asked him where he was the next day, he told us he had fallen from the top tier of a barn where they were hanging tobacco. The kid didn't have a mark on him!!!!

The kid didn't have a mark on him!!!! Maybe he fell into a bunch of Hay and the injury was not physical, but mental because he did not know the hay was there and his life passed before his eyes and he realized he has not given his total effort to the football team and as he was falling he vowed to be the best football player he could be........ Sorry the Halloween party started early for me .
