sounds like he couldn't stop scoring. A friend of mine was in such a game. He said that they couldn't help but score so they took a knee twice and punted. Still, the other team was humiliated.
Games like those can't always be avoided, but they should be.

We are a spread team that switched to complete no huddle in Week 5......we have played the weaker part of our schedule, and this is an issue for us.
We run our offense. Period.
Someday going no huddle is going to take a game we probably lose 28-14 into a game we lose 56-14, but we are running our offense.
We'll sub JV guys in, and milk the clock, but we are still no huddle, and we are still throwing the rock.

if you are playing your 3rd and 4th string guys, you are not running up the score. if its your starters playing the whole game and scoring all those points, well then your an ass.

The way the article read was, his starters didnt play much. I loved the fact he got emails complaining that his starters didnt play ENOUGH.

Which is more humiliating to the team...the score or taking knees on 1-4 down? In that game beechcroft recovered a fumble in the endzone to make it 102-0 but both coaches agreed to put the ball on the 1 where beechcroft took knees To me, that ia almost more humiliating |

I know the coaches in the 91-0 game and the guy who had the winner is a classless guy. This is not the first time he's done this by no means. He beat another team a while back 85-0! Sounds like a history to me! I know the guy and would not walk across the street to...well you know what I mean.

I was at a game a few years ago where the score was 90something to 0. I know both coaches involved and am 100% sure the winning coach never wanted to score that many points but what do you do when your freshman are turning fb blast plays into 75 yd td's against the other teams jr and sr's? I know you can take a knee and all but at the same time is it fair to your Z teamers who get killed all week not to let them run some plays? It's a tough situation but if the other team just quits out there, your back ups back ups are scoring, your running dives all 3/4th qtr, how can you not let your kids go out there and play. Not to mention in most of those games I can bet there are several scores on D to so if the other team comes and trys throwing to score and you keep picking them off who's fault is that? It's a no win situation to be in.

Our team won 77-7 this past Friday night. Our offense scored 5 TDs. That's it. We returned 3 punts for TDs and intercepted 2 passes and ran them back for TDs. Our EXTREMELY back up running back scored two of the offensive TDs and had another long run down to the 2 yard line. We kicked a FG on 1st down from the two. After this the back up RB ran 60 yards for a TD and instead of kicking the xtra point we took a knee.
It was all we could do. It was 61-7 at halftime. We have NOT caught heat for this. It was totally evident that we were doing everything we could to not pile it on.

***note to self*** do not move to Connecticut and coach football. I lived in CT all my life, it's awful haha. I believe a coach got suspended 1 game last year for this. I know last year or 2 years ago, our coach at Southington High had to kneel, kneel, punt so they could avoid the suspension. |

To me, running up the score means a coach is given the choice between smart, end of the game management and scoring more points, and out of ego, decides to pile on points.
*When it is very much in hand pull the starters
*Late in the 4th quarter, call it as you would a game where you have a 4-point lead.......that doesn't always mean "Run the ball", for us, it involves more running, but we also throw short, and will use screens versus blitzing D's in those situations.
*When you can knee it and run out the clock, DO IT!
I don't think it is anymore sportsmanlike to down the ball and punt or kick FGs on first down than it is to just run your offense.
We are spread, no huddle.......that is what we run, that is what we will run. Johnny 4-eyes may be at QB throwing to Billy butterfingers being protected by that kid whose name we don't really know we just call him by number, but we are running our offense.
Here is the flip side of the coin, and this goes for teams that blow out teams on a consistent basis (like it sounds like this team).
Eventually, maybe in the state playoff game, you will face a team that battles you. If your starters are use to sitting after halftime, what kind of shape will they be in the 4th quarter?
Belicheck caught heat for playing his guys late in blowouts last season, but I think he had a reason......they needed reps!
Our starters, unless it is REALLY bad, will play through the 3rd quarter.....after that, we sub. Of course, having a 35 man roster limits us in terms of substition anyway........

I understand, we are a spread team, in the last three district games we have taken out our starters either at halftime or after the first series in the second half. Our second team runs the same spread offense and so does the few members of our third string. The last three ballgames have been 69-0, 49-0, and 68-0 in which all the scoring by the first team have been by 42 points in the first half except for once. We have returned a punt return for a td, a int for a td and our second string has scored 21 points in those three ballgames. Now we are facing the number one team in La that is 4A and has won 49 games in a row with 2 D1 tackles that have chose Michigan and LSU respectively and the number 5 high school recruit in the country by ESPN. It worries me somewhat because our starters haven't played a full 4 quarters in 3 weeks since we played the number one team in Class 4A in Texas. As you get closer to the playoffs, you have to concern yourself with reps late in the ballgame so your guys will be conditioned. Our head coach said this very well after we got beat 55-22 in our third game of the year by Longview. He was not concerned about the score late in the game with the Loboes, he told the paper, it is our job to stop the offense and it is the offense's job to score so that is how I feel about it. Longview runs a class program. You have to worry about coaching your team and do the best you can preparing for the playoffs as it is right here upon us in four weeks.

Won this week to a conference rival 52-6.
My QB didn't throw a pass after 1/2 way of the 2nd quarter.
I told him that I wouldn't be throwing a single pass after half time because of the score, but stopped in the 2nd. It's not fair to him because of the numbers that he doesn't get. But I will not embarress my school or humiliate the other kids, it's not right.
But what do I know, I'm just an old southern coach.
I had the 2nd QB in half way through the 2nd quarter. Oddly enough, I had staff members begging me to let the backup QB throw the ball- I told them to shutup. Although the kid really needed the reps, there is no way I was going to do that with the score +40-0 in the 2nd.
The problem is that my starting QB is a victim of our success. He didn't get to pass but 8 times, it is a shame that other QB's in our county are getting more attention than him . I know he's the best, but when we are blowing people out, I cannot let him throw the football when we are up 40+ in the 2nd quarter.
Good news is that he made player of the week for being 8 for 8 passes for over 240 yards.

He has been caught taping his opponent's practices among other things... Further he is the reason that our state has to have that 50 point rule. He isn't a guy who is "running his offense" he is a guy who is open about his willingness to run his starters the entire game with the intent to demoralize an opponent... Not a guy you want to compare yourself with. |

We won a game 66-6. We scored 10 straight times. My backup FB broke a dive open for 65yds and a score. You can't make the other team want to play... at a certain point you just hope the game ends quickly.

This is why I think the IL mercy rule works. Once a team gets a 40 point lead in the second half, the clock runs continously except for change of possessions and scores. It doesn't give much time for the second half to get out hand.

I was on the ugly side of a 96-3 beating this season. As a DC, it was rough to take.
Our situation had us, an 11 man team playing 8 men on defense vs an 8 man team. We had an enrollment of 180 to their 70. It was a disaster of a night. I tried, but had no answers for how spread out the field was. 1 missed tackle and they were in space and gone. What made it worse was that we played 11 on 11 on offense so we had no advantage on offense.
I don't care which side of the ball you are on, this is a tough issue. Mercy rules hurt both teams, but so do 60+ drubbings. There are good points of emphasis on both sides of the issue.
