Today I had one of the most rewarding wins ever as a head coach. We started a program from scratch and this is our first year. Needless to say, 1st year means lack of experience. We have 68 kids at our level and we divided into 2 varsities of 22 and the rest at JV. Out of our 22, 11 have zero tackle football experience but are decent athletes. We have kept our first 4 games close but lost them all. Well, today we finally put it together from beginning to end and won 13-6. The kids showed some real grit today and battled throughout the entire game and played as a true team. Now, I have had undefeated seasons and seasons where I did not win any. But this win will always have a special place as I will be able to watch these kids grow and play on a true community team.

Congrats Coach on the first win and I am happy to see you say they played as a team! We got our first win this Saturday our program is in it's second year and we won at home 33-0 so needless to say I am very happy for my kids as well. I coached 8-9 yr olds last season and we finished 0-7 this year I coach 10 and 11 yr olds we are 1-4 so a improvement all ready!

Coach - I know what you mean. One year I was helping out with a very troubled team. They only won one game that year, but that win (20-19 over a rival) was so gutsy and so hard fought that it stands out for me (14 years later) more than a lot of the wins from championship seasons.

Ha Ha....guess a lot of us started the same way.....my first season as a hc in youth ball was horrible....had to take over the team after they had played and lost their first 2 games.....coach had a heart attack and had to quit...so they threw me in there on like a tues. afternoon...our 3rd game was thurs evening......kids didn't know where they played...didn't know any of their previous plays......wrong kids playing many positions...in fact, many of the better ones weren't even starters.....that thurs. we got severely thrashed....I mean totally embarrassed.....kids crying and discouraged.....parents giving me the evil eye....heck...the bus driver was even giving me coaching advice on the way home... lol....so the next Mon. at practice......we started our "new season".....new simple schemes....all positions up for grabs......worked hard on tackling...blocking...just very basic stuff....with the common goal of making the remainder of the games more competitive.....actually never considered we might win one, lol....anyhow.....the margins of defeat over the next few games decreased.....we had some fairly close games.....actually scored some points offensively, but lost them all, none the less....so we get to the last game of the year.....play good defense.....its a 0-0 tie, with less than 2 min. left in the game....suprisingly, due to a turnover, we're driving for the win, get inside their 5 yd. line, 4th and goal.....don't make it...they get the ball on about the 2-3 yd line...just trying to grind it out, get the tie.....one of their RB's gets the idea he can break it outside, try to score....so gets running laterally close to the goaline.....gets tackled......we win on a safety.....2-0....I still remember this game, this team and this season, 20 something years later, lol.....as bad as things went for this team, they never gave up and finished the season...well...happy!

GOOD JOB!! Hang in there, last season 0-10 LOL!! This year same team 6-0. Hardwork + Determination= Success! But the funny thing is my team from last year was my best season ever. Strange, but true I learned how to be a coach last season.
