What do yall do to show enthusiasm during games? We played a team a couple of weeks ago where one of the coaches would chest bump players after big plays when they came off the field. One of our coaches took exception to that and thought he wasnt showing any class. What do yall think about that?

celebrating big plays with your players is not lacking class. What is it with the move to remove emotion in an emotion driven game.

Depends on the coach. I cannot genuinely do stuff like that- I'm too old for one thing and for another thing, I try to remain calm on the sideline even when I am chewing someone out. If it is genuine, it is ok. If it is fake- it does nothing but make you look like an idiot and there are enough of those in the sport the way it is. Present company excepted of course.

Things like that get kids excited and is a great form of positive reinforcement.

I'm with you guys. I thought it was cool. I dont know the guy, but it seemed like his kids were really fired up, and that is a great thing.

I look at it as a little bit of a release. I'm not a chess bumper, etc., but I will get in my guys face on great plays and give them the reinforcement of their success.
I think that coaches put in a ton of time and have the right to get excited when their team/players do something great.
The only issue is when a coach gets jacked up and then looks over to the other sideline with a "take that" kind of look. I have never done that, ever. I celebrate with our guys and then focus on the next thing, be it a PAT or getting the players together to talk about an adjustment, etc.

Today's generation of kids I think love coaches that genuiely get excited about making good plays. Like a previous poster said, if it's fake, then even they can tell the difference. Being 0-4 and having been shutout the last game we played, the next time we score you better believe I'm getting all of my 200+ pounds in the air and chest bumping someone, because I don't know when I can do it again, lol.

I head butt the kids, with their helmets on, of course. The kids get a kick out of it, and it releases my emotion in a positive way. I also head butt [gently of course], the Seniors at our banquet, introducing them to the school of hard knocks.

i think it's good to have someone on staff that can share in the emotions of the moment......assistants of course....
i think the header needs to stay as calm as possible......after all, somebody's got to be thinking about the next play.....

When my team scored their first ever touchdown (new program) after a season of shutouts, there was nothing the coaches could have done to make them more entusiastic. So much so they went and scored a 2nd one a few minutes later. The only thing i could tell them was "Remember this feeling. This is what we want every game"

I don't think that's there is anything wrong with that. As coaches, we need to dish out as much positive reiforcement as we can; sounds like your coach was doing a great job of that.
IMO, sideline ettiquette is simple; keep everything as positive as possible ("as possible" is subjective). I really only chew someone's butt on the sideline if they're being lazy or they're not being sportsman. Even then, I'm not that loud about it; I pull him aside and use conversational tone. I don't raise my voice because I feel that it contributes to a negative atmosphere.

My intensity isn't limited to the game field, I am very high energy at practice, in films, in math class (I like to say I don't teach math, I coach math), at home with my wife...when she cooks a good supper I high 5 her
I was just telling that to a math teacher the other day. You see it, practice it, fix it, practice it again. just like football BTW never get behind a math teacher at a copier machine I think my wife gets a tiny bit upset that I compliment her more on her cooking than anything else. ... the way to a man's heart

Way to a man's heart my a$$...McDonalds sells food... Wife is no different than a football player...it's not how he walks, talks or looks that determines whether he can play or not...it's his skill set I'm arguing with my wife right now about the JV situation. Right now I have no wife depth chart...what am I going to do if she gets put on the PUP list? Can't cancel a game because of one injury...I think there needs to be a couple of backups and they need to start getting some reps in practice. But she's frowning on that at this time, but I'm working on it ;D Hahahaha. Let me know how it goes and what approach you took. Got a practice plan for what you're doing in that last paragraph???

It did fire them up, but I wasn't going to make it a regular thing!

I have footage of me and my buddies "Body Bash" (jumping and "high fiving" our shoulders/backs) back in 1989. I was the catcher of a section championship baseball team. Our pitcher struck out the last dude. This means I have felt the euphoria of tackling the pitcher and the subsequent pile smush. Anyway, my boys and I used to come up with various handshakes and other tidbits. Including the earliest recorded "Body Bash". When I got older and saw people do it I was livid. I should have patented it. I am like DC in a way. Being a DC I'm with him on the intensity thing. I have a somewhat different approach though. My calm demeanor seems to make our guys not panic. We line up, read what we read, and then GATA. No need to waste my energy on that. Now, on a big play, crucial play, a play that defines our goals that week? ? Nut job. My voice isn't one that disrupts a crowd...therefore I enjoy yelling to get our dudes attention. And I know we have done a good job when my voice is scratchy and throaty afterwords. Not gone....the voice doesn't need to go. I would be overdoing it then. Good luck this week men. TTH PS - DC - check your PM please!
