I'm looking for drills to help increase my sons speed. He is 8 yrs old and is already fast I just want to help him get faster. He is 65 lbs so he is on the light side.
Also how much of a difference is there is skill level from 8 to 10 yrs old. Playing for the 6-7 yr old team last year he was pretty dominate because he was the fastest. Now playing with 10 yr olds he is still top 3 speed wise but i just wanted to see if anyone can give info on if there is a big difference?

The difference in a 7 year old and 10 is night and day from speed, aggression, body control standpoint. That is why youth football coaches in draft league heavily weight age as they should. Its why when you see Pop Warner teams playing for National Titles, the teams are stacked with older/lighter kids, kids actually over the base age of the bracket but light enough they qualify to play. Lots of things you can do to increase speed, weve done it a variety of ways in the off season for the last 8 years. Lots of DVDS and books out there and places like "going vertical" that can give you what you need, Telling you to do a few drills wouldnt be sound IMHO> If you are going to do it, you have to do it safely, age appropriate and with correct form etc
As you go up the age brackets, the coaching gets better too, may depend on the league you are in. Here you cant just toss it to your fastest kid and expect him to score every time, actually fairly easy to stop a one dimensional team like that.

Heck yeah.....huge difference in my experience between 8 and 10 yr olds....most 8 yr olds saw limited playing time here and were pretty much exclusively special teams players or late in the game subs on defense.....I'm not sure you can or should, try to make a pre-teen kid faster than he naturally is.....maybe other than making sure he has the best shoes for the surface he's playing on? You might be better served working on agility's......how to read and cut off a block.....run basic pass routes.....catch a football with his hands....stuff like that.....

Form can be improved upon at a minimum even if you arent going to go full bore into a speed development program. Im with LOS on this one, seems pretty early to be on that path just yet.

Agreed, even if you don't see a lot of increase in speed, proper form is a good habit to develop now.
NOT an expert, but I try to teach my players to minimize wasted motion. Try to get arms flowing up and down (like a cell phone from the belt to the ear and back, that's one way I try to get them to visualize it) rather than across the body. Some kids try to increase their speed by throwing their heads left and right with faces contorted with each step. I remember doing this as a kid, thinking the more intense I was, the faster I ran. Kids tend to focus on that rather than form, so it throws them off a little.

Agreed...there are not any specific drills we can provide that are going to make your son faster at the age of 8. If spending $$$ on books and dvd's is not an option...make sure that your son is participating in a variety of athletic activities. Some parents make the mistake of specializing their children at an early age...does more damage then good. If you are up for spending $$$, then check out Brian Grasso...he has some great stuff!

In addition to the responses you've already received, I'd say the one thing that will help him at this age is to help him improve his running form. By learning "how" to run, he will become slightly faster and better prepared to take advantage of his physical growth in the coming years. Again, good programs and videos are available or I would suggest contacting a good HS track coach in your area for any help he can provide. AAU summer track programs can also be very beneficial for a lot of kids as well.
