Does anyone due a player of the week in youth football? One of our coaches brought up the idea and I am on the fence about it. At first I thought cool that would make the next guy try little harder but at this age if they try hard and don't get the nomination how does that sit with them and or the parents.
thanks.

I wouldn't do a player of the week. Just my opinion. I might do a "Hardest Worker" of the week.

I wouldn't either. I don't even name captains or anything like that. It's just not my cup of tea at the youth level. I prefer to let them develop leadership/work ethic through working hard in each practice, each of them setting the bar for the next. Eventually in the first couple of weeks if one kid isn't into trying, the others let him know about it and encourage him to pick it up. Most of the time they do. To me, this is preferable to captains or players of the week.
What age group are you coaching?

we started player of the week this year because one of the parents from the pee wees made a great web site for us. We had dilemma this week because are best player almost singlehandedly willed us to victory on Saturday against the defending 32-0 league champs. the problem was he got player of the week last week when he had 3 tds he has 7 on the season in just 3 games he even had the game winning kick return called back on a bad call. What I'm trying to say is this we could have gave it to this kid every week but me and the other coaches decided not to. What we decided is that we will give it to somebody that really steps up that game. The 1st game p.o.w. was are 1st year d.e. This week it was our whole special teams . They executed 2 great pooch kicks which we recovered and really changed the momentum both came after we scored, they executed are punt to perfection even with only ten men on the field , had good kickoff coverage and returned a kick for a td. Check our great website out bridgeporthurricanes.org

This could be a double edged sword kinda deal in youth ball?......Negative = it promotes or glorifies individual achievement in a team enviroment, where you have a bunch of "immature individuals".....that need to learn to work together, for a common goal(and worse than that sometimes, competitive parents, lol).......Positive = kids usually do seem to give more effort, for the simplest awards or praise.....small trophy.....helmet stickers....trip to the fast food place after a game.....etc....I'd be wary of any individual award (at this level) myself? good luck los

if you have an awards ceremony at the end of the year aren't you glorifying individual achievement in a team environment ?

Yes coachlu, I think so.....we never did that either..... in our youth program....after the season, not only to show our appreciation to all the parents and players, but also to get all the equipment back......we had a cookout for all and "every kid" got a small participation trophy....after they turned in their equipment......that seemed to satisfy everyone in the motivation department and made me happy too, since I didn't have to ride all over 2 county's, hunting football gear,lol......just had to wash it...phew!!!!

Far as captains for each game/week.....we just let the older kids in each age group(usually 3 of them) do this each week....till they all had a chance.....really more of a game thing than practice.....I'm not against awards and praise, but think "at this level", you should reward the entire team, rather than a few individuals.....if your really proud of their efforts and want to do something to show it.....give them "all" a little helmet sticker or something....or at least the entire unit that performed exceptionally, like offense, defense, special teams.....good luck los

Helmet decals for players who had a key play, or played to good levels on the whole, or were unselfish and stayed true to the scheme.
We have not won yet in the regular season, so no awards. We have not played entirely good in a game(except for our center). Few stayed true to any scheme, we have not had any one scheme(several changes) and the players who usually mess up the most get to start over the ones who are consistent.
We've yet to score more than 8, though we scored twice in a loss(a safety and a td) to match the league leaders in the second half of a game we already hugely down in, on the scoreboard.
Get USA flags from different Veterans charities. Some guys got about fifteen shiny sparkly flags on back of their helmets from last season, only they outgrew the helmets.
None awarded this year yet, we only had one regular season loss and were runners up in post season last year. We're nowhere near that now.

End of the year, most improved player gets a football, one for a returning player, one for the oldest age bracket moving on to the next level.
Usually the best older players get a vote for who will be the most improved to move up. If you can get an award to a young player who sets the example, and one of the guys in the final year who gave all to the program, that is a good way to reinforce character.
