We have a freshman center that has probably developed into the best center we have, he is playing JV. The varsity center, a sophomore, has lost confidence and continues to get worse.
My question is should we move the freshman up and the sophomore down so that the varsity offense has a better chance to succeed and the soph can gain more confidence? Or would this do more harm than good?

Best players play, period. Talk to the current center before you make the move and explain everything you stated in your post.

I would probably find another JV lineman and teach him how to snap and play Center, and use both kids on the Varsity. I assume that the sophomore kid is still the long-snapper on PAT & Punt, so you can sit him down and explain that the freshman kid is the better OL right now, but you still NEED him on long-snaps. The position is his for the taking if he works his butt off...
Can't hurt to have 2 Centers on Varsity and 1 in training... That freshman will get better faster by repping in varsity practice and 15 varsity snaps, then he will in 40 JV snaps.

No he isn't the long snapper and we have more centers that also start on other positions on the line. The problem with the sophomore center is that he can't play anywhere else and contribute on the varsity.

Can the sophomore move somewhere else and help the team? if so sell him on that idea.

The best players play. Its a great lesson for a sophomore to learn.

Well we played the freshman last night and he did a great job but the sophomore only got a few snaps, we definately don't want to lose him.

I think you should throw him under the bus. Just kidding. In my experience of coaching centers, shotgun and under center, I have found that some kids just get too stressed out to play when they are constantly thinking about snapping the football. I have had success trying to work them in at other areas in the game; even if it means moving them to Dline.
