I'd like to get your thoughts aboout freshman playing time. Do you play the kid that shows up and gives effort every practice even though he isn't really any good. Our freshman team has about 50 kids on the team. the coach plays maybe the same 20-25 kids every game. there are a bunch of kids that have been to every practice but still haven't played in a game. both games have been very close. full disclosure: i was one of those kids that was too "husky" to play Pop Warner, so I saw very little time freshman year.

I am a freshmen coach and we will play everyone at some time in the game. My starting D is full of hard working dedicated kids. It sucks that 2 of our best athletes are not starting and dont see to much time in the game because they have a "ME" attitude. Both of them are basketball studs and have been treated like that for ever. I think they said one of them could/should be Mr. Indiana in basketball by his Sr year. I do have one LBer that has a good attitude and should be starting, but never shows up to Sat practice so he sees limited time .

Assuming the kid attends practice throughout the week, I want my freshmen coaches to get a kid in the game. I insist that we work 3 sets of Wing backs (we're double wing) and 2 fullbacks with the first O-line. Our second line has another 2 sets of WB's and 2 FB that get a series in the 2nd and 3rd quarter. They have a limited number of plays they are proficient at, so we focus on first downs.
That's 30+ kids before special teams. (we have 35 kids on the team). We play our best 15-18 football players on defense for the entirety of the game if it is close, otherwise we will try to sub more. We want to play everyone, but we want to win too. It has worked well the past 2 years.
Kids this age are very ego-centric and want playing time. I have very few 14 year-olds who truly understand the team concept. They want reps, they want to have fun, and they want to win. I want them to buy in to the program and play the next season. So far, so good.

Yea, it's very nice and I don't want to lose them. I was terrible as a frosh, it was my first year playing, I can still remember Mr Brennan (the fat sob) yelling at us to run. The only reason why I kept on playing was because all my friends played. I eventually came around and started only when I was a senior. I had a nice career at a 1aa scholarship team (3 year starter). Some kids just take longer to develop

Can you play a "B" game against the other teams? or a 5th quater? This is common around here, sometimes even a "C" game if both teams have enough kids.

jgordon1,
Get a hold of Dave Cisar on here. He has great Ideas at getting every one playing time with out hurting the team. I will assume he is in the youth section a lot since he is a youth coach.
