an NFL game?
What are you looking at in particular while watching the game LIVE. Not on a 2nd or 3rd view. Just interested to see what everyone looks at. It'll probably be different if your an OC/DC/ position specific coach.
Thanks for the info / help!

The linebackers with the eye on the line, as thats usually the best you have to work with. Can't see the safeties on TV. that's what I usually watch when I'm actually at the game.

Thanks coach, I appreciate the info. What else do you watch more specifically if you care to share; footwork? technique?

It depends. When our team is on offense I watch the DE closest to me and try to tell our HC if he's coming in or not. I also try to get a good angle to see where their DTs are as well, whether or not they have a NT, etc.
I used to ask the kids those questions as they come off the field but all I ever got was (I don't know coach). How in the world the TE can't tell if the DE is inside or outside of him is beyond me....
When I am on defense I usually am yelling too much to watch much of anything lol. I try to watch the OL, see if they are pulling, if anyone is giving the direction of the play away, etc.
When I am not doing that I am watching the ball unfortunately. I have to catch myself and tell myself that I have a lot of jobs to do and watching the ball isn't one of them. But it still happens.
On TV I just watch the ball. I'm not scouting anybody so I just want to enjoy watching it.

I think it is hard to watch nfl teams and really get some thing unless you look at the blocking schems for the oline and stuff for defense.
I wish there was and ariel view of nfl games so could see pass routes from a whole field perspective.
during a live game I watch the defense to see what coverages they are in and where they are bringing pressure. I do not yell much cause most kids do not even hear you so I have a set of signals from the side line for them to see.

I watch the formations and shifts. Then watch how they create leverage and such for the run/pass game. After that I am watching the sort game and run actions. ball handling and footwork

I just watch it to watch it. I switch what I am watching usually from the OL to the LB to the DL just watch the game as a fan with a bit more insight than your regular joe. I watch enough film during the week some times its just nice to watch football to watch football.

One of my favorite things is watching the blocking develop on a kick return. And just when you think the guys gonna take it all the way - BAM! Someone flies in from the side of the screen and nails him.
I also like to watch the wide shot replays where they show the safeties and I get a little frustrated that they don't show that view all the time . . . sometimes they start out the play that way, but then zoom in on the pocket after the snap . . .

Like many others - I don't watch the NFL much for schemes - can't see enough of the field -- most things don't apply to what we do -- besides its nice just to watch for fun after having spent most of the weekend watching videos of our next opponent.
To be honest I usually watch whatever player I have on my fantasy team!

OLine...I love watching NFL OLineman's footwork...especially zone blocking teams like the Packers.
Also like to watch AJ Hawk and his reaction. Dam TV usually pans to the QB during a pass so you don't get to see the LBs pass drops.

I enjoyed watching the different ways a genius Mike Shannahan can get the ball to player like Royal. That was the best part of the second MNF game.......a great real life illustration on how to get a special player the ball in different ways.

NFL? I watch the ball. Nothing else is worth a crap IMO.
College? I watch everything. I spend a lot of time watching the line (Line coach) but I watch the back's feet, I watch the defensive line, when the camera allows I watch routes and coverages.
But then again I abuse my TIVO. I watch the same play twenty times sometimes if I see something just like as if it was one of our games.

Oline, because that's what I coach. I also like to see the special teams, although I don't find most NFL special team schemes applicable to high school.
