I was curios if anyone could help me with the proper handoff techniques for shallow, deep and pitch? Is there anywhere to read up on it? Any notes that anyone would share? I am trying to teach my 9-10 year olds appropriate technique but am not sure that I myself am correct. Thanks to anyone who can help.

I tell my kids that they need to make a house for the ball. The house should have a floor, walls and a roof with no holes except the door. I tell them that I want the house to be a two story house (One arm above the chest and one arm at belt level) and that they must make sure the door (open end side of arms) is always open on the side that is going to receive the ball so the ball can enter their house. The kids seem to understand this terminology and it works great for me. When their arms are not far enough apart I just tell them they need a bigger house. I also tell them that it is their job to run through the ball not to reach for it which would leave a hole in their floor or roof or both that the ball could slip through. You should also make sure your players are not grabbing the ball. If they are grabbing it then they are looking at it and not looking at the defenders reaction to the play. I have them run straight at me while they receive a hand off and I point in the direction I want them to cut or I have them read a blocker and cut off his back as they get the hand off. You should have all your running backs rep this for a few minutes each day. I have them run at each other from about 10 yards away and give each other hand offs for a few minutes each day while I watch and correct their hand off mechanics. Just make sure they take the correct pitch path and watch the ball into their hands when they are going to receive a pitch. They usually try to run forward instead of sideways and this often causes issues with the pitch. They need to practice the path and reception. I will have them line up behind a Center and QB and have them run to a cone to the right and catch a pitch then to a cone to the left and catch a pitch for a few minutes each day. This is a good drill to do with the QB and Center because they are practicing their QB, Center exchange at the same time. Good luck.
