How do I keep my team together during the craziest week in coaching I have ever seen in my life. The team went 13-1 last year and lost in the quarter finals. LAst year they graduated a all state qb, all state wr, and all city 1300 yard rb with 4 starting offensive linemen. These guys were replace by the sophmores that I inherited this year that were undefeated as freshmen. The defense lost 7 starters. In our first game we lost 10-7 to a perennial powerhouse team on a lst second field goal. we had a wr have 133 yards receiving and 75 yards rushing. However he fumbled a punt in the red zone and that is how they got thier fiorst td. THe field goal came when the rb knocked the ball away from the qb on a zone play. We ahd 2 wrs drop wide open tds.Despite all of that we still were a missed field goal away from overtime. The defense held them to 155 yards total and the offense had close to 400 yards. The qb was 19-28 for 223 yards and 2 ints ( one was his fault). The entire community is in uproar. I have had parents and players act as if the world is coming to an end. The aprents are rallying to get the qb benched. I have had teachers come and ask me who will be our new qb. THe lady that runs our website asked me for a comment on replacing the qb when I told her I did not have one she said that maybe she should quit because its too much pressure. At practice yesterday the wrs were so frustrade ( why I dont know ) that I had to send both out of practice and make come back for extra conditioning. THe offensive line coach had the stones to tell me that he thinks it would be better for his guys if we benched the qb for the athlethe at wr. This is crazy. No one had said anything to the kicker who missed the game tying field goal. Not a word to the wrs who dropped the tds. Not a word to the d tackel who lined up offsides to make the 43 yard field goal 38 yards which he barely made. Not a word to the rb who knocked the ball out of the qbs hand. I will not watch a entrier school blame the game on one kid. I understand pride and expecting to win every game but Jesus Christ! We are ready to blow up the whole season.
How can I keep the team together and get them top realize that we may take a few bumps early but no one will want to see us come playoff time. I honestly think that next season we will win it all when those sophmores are juniors and seniors. However I dont want to let this playoff team fall apart due to panic and un necesary worry and pressure.
