This question is for those coaches that make IZ and OZ the base of their rushing attack.
When you guys happen to have a fast, athletic QB, do any of you kick into an option mode? By option mode, I mean running a lot of shotgun, triple option zone read as your base. Or would that be too much of a switch to make from year to year, just based on your QB?
Or vice versa; if you're used to having an athletic QB, how do you adjust to a slower athlete with an arm?

i think it all depends on what type of zone run offense you use. if you are a oneback qb undercenter a quick athlete could be used on the speed or zone option and could be used to gain the edge on bootleg/nakes.

We incorporate the zone read while in gun always! Even if you don't have an athletic QB, all it takes is for the backside DE ignoring the QB and we'll get at least 3-4 yards. In the past when we didn't have an athletic QB, we'll go 2 back gun and run option to the backside of the zone... knowing that we'll almost always pitch.

that is the beauty of running zone schemes up front...it is incredibly easy to adjust to personnel.
when running IZ you must always find a way to account for the BS DE....when you have an athletic QB then your answer can be zone read...if you have a slower QB then you can run boots, cut off the backside with a fullback/H back/TE
the blocking scheme remains the same from year to year, personnel grouping to personnel grouping

The best thing about the Zone is less time thinking for the up front kids and more time drilling fundamentals.
